About the Wine

For those with a refined palate and a penchant for history, the 1994 Croft Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port offers an unparalleled experience. Sourced from the illustrious Quinta da Roêda, often hailed as the jewel of Douro Valley vineyards, this LBV encapsulates centuries of winemaking excellence.

Dating back to 1588, the House of Croft has been synonymous with exquisite Port wine. The story begins in the bustling city of York, England, and winds its way through the vineyards of Portugal. The marriage of Frances Thompson and Thomas Croft in 1681 cemented a legacy that would flourish for over four centuries. The first Croft to join the firm, John Croft, transformed the business into a leading Port house, with the earliest known Vintage Port dating back to 1781.

David Guimaraens, Croft’s esteemed Technical Director and Head Winemaker, brings a wealth of experience to the table. With a lineage steeped in Port wine making, David’s innovative techniques and sustainable vineyard practices have elevated the quality of Croft’s offerings. His collaboration with António Magalhães, a world authority on mountain viticulture, ensures that every bottle of Croft LBV is crafted with precision and passion.

LVB means "Late Bottled Vintage" and refers to a Port made from a single vintage, the vintage has to be of exceptional quality. The LVB Ports are aged for 4 to 6 years in barrels before bottling.

1994 was an oustanding vintage for Port. Vinous Media blessed this year with a 97 point score and said, "The wines are consistently superb, with their deep fruit and layered textures partly masking strong backbone and rich tannins. One of the great years for vintage Port."

Reviews

The essence of grapes. Full-bodied and tannic, yet very classy and refined. It's got grip, but rather than smashing you over the head with structure, it seduces gently with its wonderful, well-toned muscles. Best Croft since '45.~96 Wine Spectator

The nose has much more definition and vigour than the ’91 with sweet ripe black cherries, bilberry and violets. Very lifted and lively. The palate is sweet, ripe and elegant with a lovely poise and tension, certainly the best Croft since the ’66. Very ripe tannins with black cherries, bilberry, cassis and a minerally quality coming through towards the finish. A return to form, a lovely Croft with a coquettish quality. ~93 Wine Advocate
