About The Wine

Most Napa Cabernets come from a single place. This one doesn't — and that's the whole point.

The inaugural Justice Napa Valley blend started with a deliberate decision: pull the best barrels from the Lithology program, add Cabernet from Coombsville's Linstadt Vineyard, and finish with high-altitude Merlot from Candlestick Vineyard on Howell Mountain. Three Napa sub-regions in one bottle — 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 22 months in French oak, 61% new.

Now the part worth slowing down for: the names behind it. Philippe Melka, Maayan Koschitzky, and Matt Sands don't usually turn up on a bottle anywhere near this price.

Melka was named by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate as one of the top winemaking consultants in the world. He worked at Château Haut-Brion and learned Napa at Dominus — Christian Moueix's estate, from the family behind Pétrus — before building Atelier Melka into the team behind some of the valley's most decorated cult wines: Hundred Acre, Dana Estates, Dalla Valle, Bryant Family. Koschitzky, his partner and director of winemaking, came up through Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle and made Wine Enthusiast's "40 Under 40." Sands runs the cellar at Lithology — where this same trio's Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet has earned a perfect 100 points and sells for around $300 a bottle.

That last detail is the one to hold onto, because the best barrels in this blend come from that same Lithology cellar. Under the Lithology label, a wine of this pedigree is a three-figure bottle you'd think twice about. Here, it's a fraction of that.

And this bottle comes from the fabulous 2021 vintage — the year Vinous rated 97 points in Napa, calling it "a fabulous vintage in Napa Valley." The catch, in their words: "production is down sharply, 30–50% in many cases." A great year, and simply less of it made.

Wine Enthusiast called it "serious, dense and potentially age-worthy," with a window that opens in 2028 and runs through 2040. Decant one now if you can't wait. The smarter move: lay a few down and collect the dividend.

Potent, tightly wound tannins frame concentrated aromas and flavors of blackberry, oak char, graphite, and espresso. Dense and full-bodied with serious structural depth, the wine is built for the long haul — the fruit is ripe but contained, the oak present but purposeful.

Best from 2028 onward, with a drinking window extending to 2040 and beyond.

Cassis and black plum up front, then the Cabernet Franc shows its hand — graphite, crushed violet, tobacco leaf, a hint of bay. The Howell Mountain Merlot works underneath, dark-fruit density and mountain spine without raising its voice. Twenty-two months in French oak, 61% new, reads as cedar, mocha, and fine baking spice — This is a WOW! wine that should be $150+.
The palate is built, not poured. Dense and layered, fine-grained tannin with real grip, the firm acidity that marks a serious 2021. The finish is long, graphite-edged, and closes dry and structured. This drinks beautifully decanted tonight and will hold court through 2040.
Here's the part to sit with: this is the inaugural and last Justice blend (winery sold the brand), and the barrels behind it came out of the Lithology cellar in a vintage where production fell 30–50%. That exact combination — these barrels, this trio, this year — happens once. It is not being made again. When the last case ships, the wine is gone, and the only way to taste it after that is to have bought it now.

This is spectacular. It’s a dynamic and acid-driven Napa Cabernet that has a gorgeous floral freshness and boasts excellent mid-palate depth of juicy, crunchy cherry and raspberry fruit, a hint of underripe strawberry and even subtle passion fruit or tangerine peel notes from such vibrant and electric fruit character. The tannins are lithe, and the tension on the long finish will keep you coming back for more. THE PRODUCER

Lithology

Nestled in the storied hills of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain, Lithology is a modern Napa Valley winery that celebrates the ancient geological forces that shape the region’s most distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The estate sits on land that once formed part of the historic 1841 Rancho Carne Humana land grant and was first planted to vines in 1975; its original stone winery was later used by H. William Harlan as the Founders Room for Promontory and the inaugural Napa Valley Reserve vintages.

In 2014, international vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni, whose engineering background gives him a profound appreciation for soil and terroir, acquired the property and launched Lithology with a philosophy rooted in expressing place above all else. Today, the winery draws fruit from its own organic Estate Vineyard and elite sites across Oakville, Rutherford, and St. Helena to craft limited-production, single-vineyard wines that eloquently convey the mineral-rich soils of Napa Valley.
