About The Wine

This is the Brunello every other Brunello is quietly trying to be. A flat-out slam dunk — textbook in every sense, and a wine that goes toe-to-toe with the trophy names without the trophy price tag. Six critics, every one at 94 or higher. That's not a fluke; that's a wine operating on another level.

One pour and it grabs you: new leather, violet, and wild forest berry come roaring out of the glass, then unfurl into ripe black cherry, spiced blueberry, and a curl of licorice — smooth, elegant, and precise to the last drop. Bright, mouthwatering acidity, velvety tannins, and a wintergreen finish that just keeps going.

The estate has deep roots. The Cannoni-Mazzi family held Podere Brizio from 1960, and in the early 2000s Roberto Bellini — from a northern Italian family of agricultural entrepreneurs — took a stake and modernized the property, building an underground ageing cellar in 2002. The real turning point came in December 2012, when Alejandro Bulgheroni — owner of Fattoria Dievole in Chianti Classico — acquired Brizio along with the neighboring Poggio Landi estate and set out to remake both from the ground up. Under his ABFV Group, the winery earned organic certification and recommitted itself to one idea above all: honest expression of terroir.

And the terroir here is the real deal. Podere Brizio sits on a southwest-facing hilltop looking toward the Tuscan coast, ringed by olive groves and vines rooted in marine-origin sand and loam over marl and limestone more than 100 million years old. The winemaking matches the site's pedigree: long fermentations in stainless steel with indigenous yeast, then ageing in big 54-hectoliter casks — an approach that coaxes out elegance you rarely find in a region long defined by sheer muscle. The team behind it is serious talent: on-premise oenologist Giovanni Alberio and agronomist Lorenzo Bernini run the day-to-day, with renowned consultant Alberto Antonini overseeing every phase. Sangiovese clones are selected from the oldest vines on the estate, and yields are held well below what the appellation allows — less fruit, more concentration, nothing left to chance.

And 2019 is one of the all-time great Brunello vintages — Decanter called it superb. Open one tonight or lay it down: it's glorious now and built to cruise through 2043. There's no wrong move here.
