About The Wine

The Cannoni-Mazzi family had owned the Podere Brizio estate since 1960, and Roberto Bellini — from a northern Italian family of agricultural entrepreneurs — purchased a 50% stake and developed the estate through the early 2000s, constructing a modern underground ageing cellar in 2002. In December 2012, Alejandro Bulgheroni — owner of Fattoria Dievole in Chianti Classico — acquired both Podere Brizio and the neighboring Poggio Landi estates in Montalcino, setting out to revolutionize both wineries from the ground up. Under Bulgheroni's ABFV Group, the estate received a full agronomic and oenological overhaul, with organic certification achieved and a philosophy centered on terroir authenticity.

The terroir of Brizio was never in question, but under the new regime the wines truly found their groove: longer fermentations in stainless steel with indigenous yeast, and ageing in 54-hectoliter casks, brought out a level of elegance rarely seen from a region historically known for power and longevity. The winemaking team is led by on-premise oenologist Giovanni Alberio and agronomist Lorenzo Bernini, with consultant Alberto Antonini overseeing all phases of production. Sangiovese clones were selected from the oldest vines on the estate, and yields are held well below what the appellation allows. The hilltop of Podere Brizio is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards facing southwest toward the Tuscan coast, planted on marine-origin sand and loam over marl and limestone dating back more than 100 million years.

The 2019 vintage in Montalcino was defined by a wet winter that replenished water reserves, followed by a warm, dry summer with no serious extremes. Rain showers in September allowed for a harvest of juicy berries with little disease pressure, finishing in early October — delivering both quality and quantity. The result is a generation of wines combining power and elegance, widely regarded by critics as among the greatest Brunellos in recent memory. Podere Brizio's 2019 Brunello was produced from organically grown grapes, with approximately 38,000 bottles made — and the drinking window extends through 2034 and beyond.

100% Sangiovese from the certified organic estate vineyards on Montalcino's southwest-facing slopes. On the nose, aromas of new leather, violet, and forest berry open with immediate appeal, while the smooth, elegant palate delivers ripe black cherry, spiced blueberry, cinnamon, and licorice before a wintergreen finish with tightly woven, velvety tannins. The wine shows vibrant black cherries, redcurrants, and violets alongside savory spice notes of cloves and licorice; it is medium-bodied and round on the palate, with mouthwatering acidity and chewy yet fine-grained tannins. Aromas of crushed stone, dried raspberry, redcurrant, cherry cola, and blue flower define the Brizio's elegance and precise definition, with a lean, tonic, lifted, and bright finish. Best from 2027–2034, with the most structured bottles capable of development through 2043.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Black cherry, blackberry, plum, violet and mineral flavors are the hallmarks of this pure, dense and robust red, which is squarely in the fruity camp, yet bumps up against pointed tannins on the finish. The lasting impression is both fruit and tannins — best from 2027 through 2043. ~95 Wine Spectator

Crunchy and blooming red wine, displaying vibrant black cherries, redcurrants and violets, together with fascinating, savory spice notes of cloves and licorice. Medium-bodied and round on the palate with mouthwatering acidity. Chewy yet fine-grained tannins. Lively and flavorful. Hold until 2027. ~94 James Suckling

Shows pretty aromas of crushed stone, dried raspberry, redcurrant, cherry cola and blue flower. The elegance and finer qualities of this wine are what stand out most, with pretty definition and sharpness along the way. The finish is lean, tonic, lifted and bright. ~94 Wine Advocate Robert Parker

Dark magenta/ruby, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino has a great nose, with concentrated power and purity in its aromas of cedar, fresh black raspberries, lavender, and baking spice. Full-bodied, although it remains linear with an even spine of acidity and refined tannins, it has great mouthwatering lift and a clean, long finish. It’s an impressive offering with a wide drinking window over the next 10-15 years. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The nose is tangy, textured and balanced, with aromas of raspberry, passion fruit, blood orange, clay pot, soil and herbs. On the palate, strawberries and raspberries join the medicinal freshness of fennel, licorice, citrus and salt, held by grippy, grainy tannins. ~92 Wine Enthusiast
