Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest Rioja wineries. Founded in Elciego (Álava) in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga, the winery has been a reference point at both national and international level. The winery itself is literally a work of art, designed and "Wrapped" by Frank Gehry. The winery also features a luxury hotel for guests.
The company produces its wines in two different bodegas located in Elciego (Álava) and Rueda (Valladolid). Marqués de Riscal exports 60% of its production, distributing to more than 80 countries. Marqués de Riscal wines have received the highest international accolades as well as numerous awards and mentions in the critical press.
Marqués de Riscal was the first non-French wine to win the diploma of honor of the Bordeaux Exhibition. This diploma was added to the wine’s label and to this day is represented on the wine bottles with pride. The golden net is used to protect the wine from forgery or tampering.
100% Tempranillo.
The wine spends 2.5-3 years in barrel, followed by three years in bottle prior to release.
Tasting Notes: Red wine. A wine that is made and designed to mature for more than 50 years. Intense black-cherry colour with violet hues. On the nose it expresses its complex, balsamic, aromatic intensity, in perfect balance with the fruit and the lightly toasted aromas which recall fine oak. On the palate it is smooth and full, in harmony with the fruit, with good concentrated tannins, round and with a long finish.
Reviews
The 2001 Gran Reserva is a glass-coating opaque purple color. It presents an aromatic array of incense, Asian spices, cigar box, violets, and an assortment of black fruits. Dense, sweet, and powerful, this loaded effort from a great vintage will continue to evolve for another 8-10 years and deliver prime drinking through 2036. Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja’s legendary estates. Here tradition and quality go hand in hand despite the Bodega’s enormous production and a few minor tweaks to update the style. ~93 Wine Advocate
