About the Wine

Jean Gautreau discovered Sociando-Mallet in the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne in 1969. Going on the recommendation from Jean Michel Cazes of Chateau Lynch Bages, It was love at first sight, despite the fact that the property was in need of renovations. The terroir was excellent and the domain afforded a magnificent view overlooking the Gironde Estuary. Sociando-Mallet's extraordinary terroir, consisting of Günz gravel with clay subsoil, is propitious to growing excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and producing wines with wonderful freshness.

Seeking the best possible quality, Jean Gautreau, renovated the estate’s buildings, built a barrel cellar, and gradually improved the vineyards. Today, the property is comprised of 83 hectares producing nearly 450,000 bottles a year.

The L'Autre de Sociando Mallet is a restaurant only label produced from the younger vines of the property and the plots whose soil is more favorable to the production of high-quality Merlot. This grape variety represents half of the final blend of this wine. The vines for the L'Autre cover around twenty hectares and receive the same care and are tended in the same way as the rest of the vineyard throughout the year.

A few months ago, the only place to find this wine was in high end, Michelin rated restaurants where you’d be expected to pay $100+ for the privilege to drink this wine. Now, due to closures, we have secured an exclusive opportunity to share this wine with you at a steep discount. Enjoy!

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon. Full-bodied with a deep, dark color. The complex bouquet is dominated by black fruit aromas with a touch of minerality and well-integrated, elegant oak. The wine is balanced and complex with a fresh, straightforward, finish, and wonderful length.

Reviews

La belle is the second wine of Château Sociando-Mallet. It presents itself Gironde and greedy, with rounded shapes, notes of ripe fruit, a mouth with a spicy touch, and a nice tension in its finish. To keep another 5 to 8 years and to open with a grilled steak. ~15/20 Cuisine et Vins de France
