This stunning classic Rhone blend (Syrah, Viognier) is an effort from Pax Mahle. This Rich full-bodied Syrah is an ode to Cote Rotie in the Northern Rhone, the birthplace of Syrah and Viognier. Coming from the Alder Springs vineyard nestled within Mendocino County this vineyard produces unparalleled fruit with rich, earth-driven flavors, and hints of spice. For those who love Old World Syrah and the Northern Rhone style, rejoice because Pax Mahle has captured the very best of this terroir!

The 2011 Black Label is 100% Syrah that spent five years in oak. I am not sure 2011 was a vintage that presented the ideal conditions for giving wine extended time in barrel. There is good aromatic nuance in the glass, but in my view, the 2011 is lacking a bit in both fruit and freshness, which gives the wines a slightly faded feel. I would prefer to drink the 2011 sooner rather than later. ~90 Vinous Media
