About the Wine

Villa Cafaggio dates back to more than 600 years ago, when this estate, (previously named Cahago) was the property of the Benedictine monks of Siena. It was in 1860, that this winery took a 180 turn, thanks to its time owners, the Farkas family, who decided to renew the cellar, and vinification area, and even replant the vineyards and olive trees. Today, this historical estate is the property of ISA, a financial service holding company of Trento.

Cafaggio’s location is majestic. This property is placed in the hamlet of Greve in Chianti, in Panzano. This estate, which comprises 150 acres (30 of them planted with vineyards), is in Conca d’Oro a place recognized as one of the finest regions in the Chianti Classico.

Basilica del Cortaccio, is a single 10-acre vineyard, planted with only Cabernet Sauvignon. This vineyard produces outstanding Supertuscans made entirely with Cab Sauvignon, like this unique 2013 Cafaggio Basilica del Cortaccio Cabernet Sauvignon.

This wine was born on an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate rewarded this year with a 96-point review. And Vinous Media said that this was "A very good vintage, especially among the better wines, where the cool, late-ripening season produced translucent, vibrant wines."

Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This beautiful wine opens with delicate aromas of cassis, tobacco, and cedar. The robust palate delivers mature plum, clove, and espresso alongside chewy tannins. Long and pleasant finish.

Reviews

Cedary and woodsy notes lead off as this red settles into plum, leather, and tobacco flavors, though it is still firmly structured and dry on the finish, with a lightly astringent feel. Sweet fruit returns in the end. Best from 2019 through 2032. 2,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator.

Attractive blackberry and blackcurrant character with hints of walnut. Medium to full body, juicy fruit, and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling.
