About the Wine
Prepare to be stunned. When you mention Heidi Barrett, you’re talking about the undisputed queen of Napa Valley winemaking—the woman behind five perfect 100-point scores, the “First Lady of Wine” as Robert Parker calls her, and the genius who crafted some of the most coveted Cabernets in the world, including Screaming Eagle. Her 2013 La Sirena Pirate TreasuRed is the embodiment of her boundless imagination and exacting skill, blending seven Bordeaux and Rhône varieties into a single bottle of pure luxury and pure fun. It’s bold, it’s spicy, it’s silky, and it’s everything you’d expect from one of Napa’s most iconic winemakers.
Parker himself said it best: "One of my favorite wines from Barrett." And he’s not the only one who’s been swept away by the magic of this wine. Antonio Galloni called it "one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting," and that’s saying something.
But Heidi’s story is just as incredible as the wines she crafts. From her early beginnings in Napa with her legendary winemaker father, Dick Peterson, to her rise as Napa’s “Queen of Cult Cabernet,” Heidi’s career has been nothing short of meteoric. After studying at U.C. Davis, she made waves as the winemaker at Buehler Vineyards, then went on to work with Dalla Valle, Screaming Eagle, and Paradigm Winery, among others. She earned a reputation for crafting wines that were not just exceptional, but iconic—setting the standard for Napa’s cult wines.
In 1994, Heidi founded her own label, La Sirena, which allowed her to fully unleash her creative vision. The Pirate TreasuRed came about almost by accident in 2007, when a serendipitous blending of seven grapes turned into a wine so good it led to an entirely new direction for Heidi—one full of playful complexity and bold personality.
This wine isn’t just a bottle; it’s a statement. The 2013 vintage is legendary, described as a once-in-a-generation classic, a Napa treasure that doesn’t just stand out, it commands attention. It’s rich, it’s bold, it’s unforgettable. And today, you’re getting a taste of history, crafted by the woman who literally shaped Napa Valley’s reputation.
Barrett’s Pirate TreasuRed is not your average bottle. It started as an accident—an accidental masterpiece born from a playful, experimental spirit. Seven grapes, blended to perfection, creating a wine with a vivid, playful complexity that only a master like Barrett could conjure.
In the world of cult Napa wines, Barrett’s creations are revered like rare treasure, and this 2013 Pirate TreasuRed? It’s the holy grail. Don’t miss your chance.
*Note: This “pirate” bottle had a strange shape and its 12 years old. So, the cork may be more easily removed with a prong shaped corkscrew.
Tasting Notes
Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Sirah.
The 2013 La Sirena Pirate TreasuRed from Napa Valley is a rich, dark ruby red wine, with an opulent and inky appearance. It offers a complex blend of aromas including ripe black and red fruits, layered with toasty French oak and hints of caramel. The age here give this bright cranberry, herbs de provence, and cigar box that’s mouth watering. The palate is full-bodied with flavors of berry, plum, and vanilla, supported by graceful tannins and balanced acidity, leading to a long, powerful finish.
Critical Reviews
The 2013 Pirate TreasuRed is one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting. Just bottled, the 2013 is going to need a bit more time in bottle to come together, but it is delicious today. The 2013 is dark and deeply spiced, with firm 2013 tannins and plenty of acidity. In this vintage, the Syrah is especially prominent. ~92 Vinous Media
