About The Wine

Pahlmeyer is one of Napa Valley's most storied names. Founded in 1986 with the ambition of creating a "California Mouton," the estate quickly earned cult status and has never looked back.

If you love Napa Cabernet, Jayson by Pahlmeyer is the wine that earns a permanent spot on your radar. This is Pahlmeyer's "access point" to one of Napa Valley's most celebrated Bordeaux-style programs — the same mountain-fruit philosophy and French oak regimen that defines their flagship Proprietary Red, delivered at a price that makes sense to drink now..

The Jayson Red is a Merlot-led Bordeaux blend drawing from a remarkable roster of Napa vineyards — William Hill, Broken Rock, Stagecoach, Waters Ranch, and Round Pond in Rutherford — plus Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the legendary Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma. These aren't afterthought sources. They're the same parcels serious Napa collectors fight over.

Winemaker Katie Vogt hand-sorts every lot, ferments in stainless steel with a small percentage in oak tanks, and ages the wine 15 months in new French oak — Taransaud barrels specifically, chosen for the structure and texture they build without masking fruit.

The result is exactly what you'd want from a great Napa red blend: approachable now, with enough architecture to reward patience.

51% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Cabernet Franc.

The nose opens with juicy macerated raspberry, pencil lead, clove, cedar, and fresh sage. On the palate, a compact, fruit-forward core — plush and silky in texture — opens to complex layers of earth and warm spice.

Bright, integrated acidity keeps everything fresh and focused, carrying through to a lingering finish of dusty plum and cocoa. Full-bodied with fine, polished tannins that are ready now but structured for the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This is a very polished wine in 2022, well-built with neatly knit tannins that form a solid foundation for the dark currant and blackberry fruit that floods the mid-palate. Good depth of concentration and driving energy create a sense of tension and vibrancy. Indeed not a shy wine, yet more approachable, with tannins almost melting away on the finish—very characteristic of the warm vintage. Grape sources include William Hill and Broken Rock in Napa, Stagecoach, Waters, and Round Pond in Rutherford, along with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from the iconic Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma. Grapes are sorted by hand, fermented in stainless steel with a small percentage in oak tanks, and then aged for 15 months in 80% new French oak. ~ 94 Decanter

A handsomely structured version, with refined black currant, espresso, tomato leaf and toasty spice flavors that persist toward medium-grained tannins. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. ~ 91 Wine Spectator
