From the heart of Burgundy’s Nuits-St-Georges comes a Pinot Noir that defies all expectations. Considered one of the best 1er crus from this estate, the Lecheneaut brothers coax terroir into their Pinot Noir, no matter what challenges each vintage brings. In 2013, the result was clean flavors of fresh cherry and raspberry, lifted up by aromas of crushed violets and rose with an earthy, mushroomy finish. If you’ve wondered why there’s hype about Burgundy, this wine says it all. Even Allen Meadows of Burghound calls this wine "Sweet Spot Outstanding".
About the wine
The 2013 vintage in Burgundy was excellent offering ripe fruit with exceptional balance and purity of fruit. The Lechenaut Nuits-St-Georges is an authentic pinot noir, varietally correct, with a deep ruby hue and enchanting aromatics of fresh cherry, strawberry, and rose. With a few more years in the bottle those will soften beautifully and reveal savory tones of leather, dried florals and dusty earth. Made completely from their own vines, Domaine Lecheneaut focuses on a family plot of just 10 hectares allowing the two brothers a laser focus on quality in the fields and the cellar. From biodynamic farming to judicious use of new oak and these wines are completely handcrafted and incredibly limited. Add in Jurassic limestone and chalky clay soils and the Lecheneaut bottlings become ones to savor and cherish--get this while you still can!
*Sweet Spot Outstanding* This is almost always Lécheneaut's best 1er and so it is again in 2013. Like the Damodes this is notably gamy with its very fresh nose of assorted red berries, iron-inflected earth and dried herbs. There is good volume and punch to the very rich medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a robust but not really rustic finish that delivers outstanding persistence. This should be approachable after only 6 to 8 years but reward 12 or more. 91-93pts Allen Meadows, Burghound
Good bright, dark red. Reticent aromas of raspberry, dark cherry and smoked meat are lifted by a violet topnote. Fresh, juicy red fruit flavors convey concentration and refinement, with excellent mineral tension contributing to the impression of precision and tautness. Atypically floral and classy for this cru. The Lécheneauts always pick their Pruliers vines early as this fruit ripens quickly. Very stylish, fine-grained wine with suave tannins. Philippe Lécheneaut noted that the estate's vines benefited from especially long hang time between flowering and harvest of about 110 days in 2013. 92pts Stephan Tanzer
