About The Wine

Tenuta di Arceno has been making wine since the 16th century, near the fork of the Ambra and Ombrone rivers in Tuscany. The Del Taja family assembled the estate parcel by parcel starting in 1504; the Piccolomini family added gardens, lakes, and villas in 1829. In 1994, Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke acquired the property — one of Jackson Family Wines' first estates outside California.

Arcanum is the pinnacle of the estate's Toscana IGT lineup, built on Cabernet Franc — the true signature grape here. The 2019 vintage earned a Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri Award. Only 1,000 cases are made; 960 imported.

The 2013 vintage was phenomenal — a classic cooler year with a slightly later harvest. The wines are elegant, vibrant, with well-developed tannins and fresh acidity. This bottle swirls with aromatics, rounded and velvety on the palate, detailed and elegant.

Dark ruby-crimson in the glass. Warm blackberry, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, wild herbs, red leather, and dusty earth. Richly saturated and silky on the palate, with density, volume, and persistence. The 70% new French oak is integrated and melted into the fruit. Layers of plush fruit and earth form a velvety Super Tuscan that drinks now through 2039.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2013 Arcanum is a blend of 73% Cabernet Franc with smaller parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Franc element is obviously strongest, and you get steely notes of black fruit follow by wild sage and rosemary oil. This is a powerful and thickly layered red wine that pushes the boundaries of extract and intensity, especially for a Tuscan red wine. Off the top of my head, I can count maybe ten wines from the region that take on such a full-bodied and opulent approach. This wine should age forward for many years to come.~ 96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Juicy and chewy with lots of dark fruit, dark chocolate and hints of walnuts. Full-bodied. Still needs to soften a little. Mainly cabernet franc. Try in 2020. ~91 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Tenuta di Arceno

Tenuta di Arceno is owned by Jackson Family Wines. Jackson Family Wines is a wine empire that owns wineries in Italy, France, Australia, and Chile. Tenuta di Arceno has been a center for winemaking since the 16th century. The estate is located near the fork of two rivers – the Ambra, which flows to the North, towards Florence; and the Ombrone, which flows to the South, towards Grosseto. The Del Taja family purchased the land parcel by parcel in 1504, expanding the estate and adding architectural enhancements. In 1829, the Del Taja family sold the property to the Piccolomini family, who added to the grandeur of the estate by building gardens, lakes, and many of the villas that stand on the property today. Tenuta di Arceno was acquired by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke in 1994, and it was one of the first estates the Jackson Family purchased outside of California.
