About the Wine

Chateau Monbousquet has always been regarded as a high-performing chateau. In 1999 when it was purchased by Gerard Perse, the quality of wine, drastically improved. In 2006 the estate was elevated to Grand Cru Classe with respect to the drastic increase in performance of the product. Today Michel Rolland consults, which and provides great insight for the estates wine production. The 2014 vintage shows a great balance between the weight of the wine and its approachability.

Monbousquet’s terroir is truly exceptional, with mostly warm, deep gravel to the south and sandy-clay soils to the north. Similar to Cheval Blanc and Figeac, its soils are largely gravel, and thus warm. The warm soils in the vineyards allow for the relatively late-ripening Cabernets to ripen perfectly. This natural feature accounts for a particularly large proportion of Cabernet grapes in the vineyard’s composition.

Dating back to 1540, Chateau Monbousquet is no stranger to winemaking. In its long history, the estate has always been highly regarded for the wine that is produced, known both for power and finesse. With a cooler vintage like 2014, balance is the ultimate goal.

Aging: 18-24 months in new French Oak

Tasting Notes: : 60% Merlot, 30% cabernet franc,
10% cabernet sauvignon. The nose exudes aromas of ripe blackcurrants, licorice, and wild herbs, leading on to an expansive palate displaying rich black and red fruits supported by silky smooth and almost seamless tannins

Reviews

Very aromatic and fresh with lovely brightness and perfume. Medium to full body, fine and silky tannins and a bright finish. Ultra-fine and balanced Monbousquet. Better after 2020 but already very pretty. 93 James Suckling

The 2014 Monbousquet has a lifted bouquet with floral black fruit, well defined and quite mineral-driven in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and poised and almost as if there was a little Cabernet Franc here! [Post-edit - there is 30%]. Surprisingly classic in style replete with an almost old-fashioned but charming finish. Not to everyone’s taste, but this is well crafted. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 91 Vinous Media
