About the wine

They say, “home is where the heart is”.  That’s how the Marquis de Ségur felt about Calon Ségur. He was considered one of the greatest winemakers in all of Europe in the 18th century. At that time, he was making wine at numerous Chateau including the Lafite and Latour.  He lived at Calon, and is now remembered for making the statement:

“I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon”

These words have forever marked the history of the property.  In the following century, the heart was engraved in the stonework of the château.  And, later the heart made its way onto the wine label.

Reviews

Aromas of blackberries, currants, cedar and tobacco. Full-bodied, layered and dense. Great fruit yet tight and structured. A classically proportioned red with so much intensity. A wine for the future. Try it in 2022. ~95JS

With 82% of Cabernet Sauvignon (more than usual), this is a classic juicy, black currant-flavored Bordeaux. It has great style, its juicy, crisp character shining through. The tannins are right there, shaping the delicious fruits. 94-96WE

The 2015 Calon-Ségur has a fresh and very well defined bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and crushed stone aromas, very focused and beautifully integrated new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, well judged acidity, lightly spiced and quite saline toward the marine-tinged finish that fans out beautifully. There is classiness in this Saint-Estèphe and it should age with grace. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting. ~94VM
