About the Wine

Château des Labourons dominates the beautiful hillsides of the Fleurie appellation. It is located 3 kilometers further up the hill from the hamlet of Les Labourons. The combination of the altitude, slope, exposure, and quality of the soil have created a promising terroir in the heart of the Fleurie Cru.

Château des Labourons' current architecture dates from the 19th century. It was rebuilt from ashes after a devastating fire, but still retains some of its original architectural character. This Château has a long history, over five generations of the "de Lescure family, and it was already producing wine by the 18th century.

Louis Latour stands out among its competitors as it controls every aspect of production from grape to bottle. The winery operates its own vineyard, nursery, forests for oak sourcing of their barrels, printing shop, and even unique bottle shape.

Today, Maison Latour operates 25 family-owned and managed companies around the world. The winery produces wine from 140 appellations. The winery also owns and operates Maison Simmoney-Febve in Chablis and Maison Henry Fessy, which remarkably produces wines in nine out of ten Cru Beaujolais. The winery also produces white wine in the Ardeche (near Cotes du Rhone) and Pinot Noir at Dom. de Valmolsinne in Southern France.

In the US, Louis Latour operates as its own importer, cutting out the middleman, which mirrors BHW's own cost-efficiency.

Jean Charles Thomas has been the winemaker at Louis Latour for 32 years. Prior to that, he apprenticed with Jean Pierre Jobard for more than 10 years. Jean Charles is widely considered one of the finest winemakers in the world, with unrivaled experience and expertise with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. During his tenure at Louis Latour, he has produced more than 40 wines rated 95+.

Tasting Notes: 100% Gamay. The Fleurie "Château des Labourons" 2015 has a beautiful bright and intense robe. The nose reveals black fruits and spices and the texture is superb with impressive concentration. In the mouth, you encounter blackberry and cassis flavors and the finish is delicately spiced and most enjoyable.

Reviews

Very spicy and stony aromas here with the ripe dark fruits. Hints of dried flowers. Medium body, linear tannins, and a savory finish. Delicious and serious. Drink or hold. ~92 James Suckling
