About The Wine

Brunello di Montalcino is Italy's most prestigious red wine — a 100% Sangiovese from a single hilltop town in Tuscany, and one of the most age-worthy bottles on the planet. If you love the structure and cellar-worthiness of a great Napa Cabernet but want something with more elegance, complexity, and a longer track record, Brunello is the natural next step. The Riserva tier takes that further still — more selective fruit, longer aging, and a wine built to evolve for decades. The 2016 is a rare convergence of a legendary vintage and a producer that has been doing this the right way since before most Napa estates existed.

Capanna is one of Brunello di Montalcino's founding family estates — Giuseppe Cencioni established it in 1957, making it among the earliest producers of the modern Brunello era. Today the estate spans 20 hectares of southeast-facing vineyards in the prized Montosoli area, north of the town of Montalcino, where complex volcanic soils and cooler conditions allow Sangiovese to ripen slowly and develop extraordinary depth. No chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used, and the family maintains natural biodiversity throughout the vineyard.

The Riserva is not made every year. It is produced only in the finest vintages, from a strict selection of the oldest vines on the estate — prioritizing clusters with smaller berries and looser bunches, which are naturally more concentrated and more resistant to disease.

The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest in Brunello's history: a cool, balanced growing season that delivered wines of rare precision, freshness, and structural harmony. "I like to say that 2016 would be the greatest vintage ever for Brunello if it weren’t for the stupendous 2015." James Suckling

After fermentation, the wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks of 10 to 25 hectolitres for four full years, followed by further bottle aging before release. Only 14,272 bottles were produced.

Deep ruby with a luminous, shiny intensity. The nose is immediately captivating — orange zest, cherry blossom, cherry stones, and ripe peach layered with hazelnuts, cedar, and a lift of spearmint. With air, dried leaves, wet forest floor, and sandalwood emerge, adding an earthy, woodland complexity. Fresh raspberries and plum notes weave through alongside hints of liquorice and subtle savoury depth. On the palate the wine is generous and lustrous, with cherry fruit studded with sage and cinched by grippy, finely meshed tannins that are slowly yielding. Multi-layered and salty with good tension, the finish is very long and fragrant. The sharp acidity and restrained power are hallmarks of the 2016 vintage — this is a wine that rewards patience. Drink 2025–2038.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Powerful, bright garnet red. Rich, very appealing nose with notes of ripe raspberries and fresh plums, some liquorice and subtle savoury notes in the background. Grippy, finely meshed tannins on the palate, multi-layered, salty, good tension, very long finish. ~98 Falstaff

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up with a classic Capanna profile, rich yet elegant, with masses of crushed black cherries, sweet herbs, cloves and hints of cigar box. This is velvety yet not weighty, with a salty core of minerals and brisk acids that enliven its citrus-tinged red berries and exotic inner spice. While persistent and structured, the 2016 keeps you coming back to the glass, savory and saline in character with grippy tannins, but also a tug of residual tension that keeps the expression unexpectedly fresh. This is a tremendous Brunello Riserva in the making, and all it needs is time. ~96 Vinous Media

This has a gorgeous nose of orange zest, hazelnuts, cherry blossom, cherry stones, peaches, cedar and some spearmint. Firm, dense and structured, with a wealth of fruit and fragrance. Lengthy. Still tight and chewy. Best from 2025. ~95 James Suckling

The Capanna 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva reveals a medium-dark ruby color and shiny intensity. This Riserva is balanced and quite beautiful, showing that sharp clarity and freshness that only Sangiovese can deliver in cool and balanced vintages such as this. To the palate, the wine is rather restrained, showing a mid-weight approach and lots of crisp acidity on the close. This Riserva needs more time to open and a few more years of cellar aging. Fruit selection for this wine prioritizes the best clusters with smaller berries and looser bunches that are more resistant to damp and disease. The finished wine ages in large oak casks for four years. Production is 14,272 bottles. ~94+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Established by the Cencioni family in 1957, Capanna now boasts 20 hectares of southeast-facing vineyards in the area of Montosoli. Selected from the oldest vines, the Riserva is aged in 10- to 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks. It is immediately seductive in its aromas of dried leaves, wet forest and sandalwood - yet suggests that there is more to come. Lustrous cherry is studded with sage on the dense palate. This is generous but cinched in the right places, while substantial, chewy tannins are ultimately yielding. Will be better in a few years. ~94 Decanter
