About The Wine

Chateau Olivier is classified as Grand Cru Classé in both red and white in the Classification of Graves Wines of 1953. In this Classification, 16 Chateaux of the region are listed, Including the Chateau Haut-Brion. Olivier is a very old seigniory, dating back to the Middle Ages. It is said that the Black Prince enjoyed coming here to hunt, as the surrounding forests were so well-stocked in game. Since the 19th century, the estate has belonged to an old Bordeaux family in the shape of the Bethmanns. With the power and structure that 2018 brought to the vineyards and the incredible terroirs that produce these grapes, this wine is built to last.

Located just 6 miles from the charming city of Bordeaux and with more than 135 acres of vineyard planted in soils composed of gravel on a clay and limestone base, Chateau Olivier has a perfect terroir for both red and white wines. In charge of agronomy and winemaking is Laurent Lebrun, who has worked on important wine projects both in Australia and France.

2016 was en epic year for the Left Bank in Bordeaux. Vinous Media awarded this year with a 98 point review and said, "The 2016s are absolutely remarkable wines. The word that comes to mind, unfortunately so often overused, is balance. The best 2016s are absolutely harmonious, with the tannins barely perceptible at all. The 2016s also have tremendous energy and bright, acid-driven profiles, with many wines playing more in the red-fruit area of the flavor spectrum."

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Dense tannins are balanced by equally rich fruit in this wine. It comes from vines around a medieval, moated castle on the edge of Bordeaux city. The wine is full of ripe, juicy blackberry flavors that circle of core of dryness. Both will allow the wine to age well. Drink from 2025. ~95 Wine Enthusiast

This is generous, well judged and jam-packed with the luscious black fruits that 2016 specialises in. Beautifully juicy, the aromatics are very clean, with a deeply spicy side to the cassis and blackberry. Well worked tannins, very classic Pessac. Excellent. ~94 Decanter

A solid column of pretty cool fruit with blackcurrants and stones. Full body, polished and chew tannins and a juicy finish. Hints of asphalt and smoke to the dark fruit at the end. ~93 James Suckling

Lively, with lightly mulled plum and cherry notes, backed by licorice root and roasted apple wood details. Fleshy, but lively throughout. Just a touch extracted in feel through the finish. ~93 Wine Spectator
