About the Wine

ONLY 10 minutes from the world-famous Château Ausone, you'll find Château Beau-Séjour Bécot—a Premier Grand Cru Classé that's been quietly making incredible wines for centuries.

Here's the crazy part: people have been making wine on this exact spot for over 2,000 years. The Bécot family has owned it since 1929, and today Juliette Bécot and Julien Barthe are carrying on the tradition.

The winemaking here is next level. Michel Rolland—a 100pt winemaker and legend—worked his magic here for 40+ years. He absolutely nailed it during the legendary 2000s vintages. Now Thomas Duclos is keeping that excellence alive.

The vineyard sits on Saint-Émilion's golden limestone plateau. Picture this: 54 acres of 75-year-old vines, mostly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with roots diving deep into those famous clay-limestone soils. This is the stuff that makes Saint-Émilion special.

The 2016 Croix de Beauséjour is the château's second wine—think of it as the greatest hits album. Same incredible terroir, same expert winemaking, but ready to drink now and won't break the bank. It's your chance to taste what this legendary estate is all about without waiting decades or paying flagship prices.

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes

The 2016 Croix de Beauséjour, the second wine of Château Beauséjour, showcases a vibrant bouquet of fresh herbs, tobacco, and red fruits. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, silky tannins, offering layers of currants, darker fruits, and earthy tobacco notes. There’s a nice balance of fresh brightness with a subtle smokiness and floral nuances. While enjoyable now, this wine has the structure to age for 10-15 years, developing even more depth with time.

Reviews

The clarity and freshness to this is most impressive with fresh herbs and hints of tobacco on the nose and palate. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a radiant finish. Second wine of Château Beauséjour. Drink in 2023. ~94 James Suckling

Medium-bodied, soft, supple textured, fresh, bright and offering an array of red fruits, tobacco, thyme and floral characteristics, this will be fun to drink early in life for its elegant textures and ripe berry notes. ~91 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

The second wine of Château Beauséjour, the 2016 Croix de Beauséjour offers lots of currants and darker fruits, with a beautiful earthiness and tobacco character. It's medium-bodied, supple, and rounded on the palate, yet has plenty of density and depth. ~90 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Croix de Beauséjour is a serious second wine endowed with quite a bit of structure that should allow it to age gracefully for 10-15 years. Smoke, scorched earth, tobacco, leather, licorice, spice and a whole host of dark flavors give the Croix its decidedly somber, brooding personality. The blend is approximately 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with the Franc giving the wine its aromatic and structural signatures. I would not be surprised if the 2016 shows even better than this note suggests in a few years' time. ~90 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
