About The Wine

Bodegas Emilio Moro traces its roots back to 1891, when Emilio Moro began farming vineyards in Pesquera de Duero, laying the foundation for one of Ribera del Duero’s most influential family wineries. Generations later, that same focus on vineyard identity still defines the estate.

Clon de la Familia is not a single-vineyard wine. It is a family decision, shaped slowly over decades. The Moro family studied their own vineyards, identifying the Tinto Fino vines that best expressed balance, depth, and character. From those vines, they selected the healthiest shoots and used their buds to graft new plantings. This long process became the foundation of Clon de la Familia, a wine built from the estate’s most expressive genetic material rather than from one site alone.

2016 began cold and wet. Low spring temperatures and heavy rainfall pushed budbreak back by a stretch. Those late rains turned out to be the whole story. The water banked in the soil carried the vines through the rest of the season. The harvest came in abundant, balanced, and fully ripe.

The 2016 pulls from three plots, not two. Cornalvo, Camino Viejo and La Mira.

Between them, they cover the three soils that define Ribera del Duero: chalk, clay, and stone. That is the entire argument for this bottle. One clone, three soils, one wine.

Maceration runs for about 26 days in small tanks. Malolactic follows, then ageing in the house's most exclusive French oak.

Clon de la Familia carries power, but it is measured. Every choice reflects intention, from the decades-long vine selection to the way depth and structure are held in check. This is a Ribera del Duero built to evolve, rewarding patience rather than chasing immediacy.

Only ten cases of the 2016 reached the US. There are perhaps a thousand bottles of Clon de la Familia in a given year, worldwide. This is not a wine the family makes to move volume. It is the one they make to prove the clone was worth saving.

Lay it down or open it with something slow-cooked and serious. Either is defensible.

100% Tempranillo. Very deep garnet in the glass.

The nose leads with finesse rather than force. Floral lift, red fruit, then darker plum and blueberry. A menthol edge and a faint mineral note sit behind them. Barrel and bottle age have knitted the primary and tertiary aromas together.

The palate is enveloping. Meaty, full-bodied, silky, with polished tannin and real structure underneath. The finish is long and persistent.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Rich and expressive, with flamboyant aromas of coffee liqueur and toast on the nose, which are immediately more subtle on the palate and serve as quiet accents for the flavors of baked blackberry, dark chocolate-covered cherry, cedar and dried lavender. A dense, full-bodied red, dark and brooding, with muscular, well-integrated tannins, orange peel acidity and a velvety texture. This has a pronounced streak of iron-laced minerality, which gains momentum through the midpalate and drives the finish. Drink now through 2031. 110 cases made, 10 cases imported. ~96 Wine Spectator

In this wine, aromas of elderberry, cherry cola and purple flowers set the stage for flavors of purple plum, Mission fig, mocha, citrus zest, violet and a hint of black pepper. Bold tannins coat the tongue and gums and sit there for a bit, but bright fruit offers the palate a continual sense of freshness. ~ 95 Wine Enthusiast

Spicy and dark with tons of black and blue berries. Hints of vanilla, sandalwood, dark chocolate and citrus, too. Complex and full-bodied with a juicy core of blackberries. Dense and compact with silky, dusty tannins. A good amount extraction here, but complex and really fine-grained. Very long. Drink or hold. ~ 94 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Bodegas Emilio Moro

Bodegas Emilio Moro is a family-owned winery rooted in Pesquera de Duero, with origins dating back to 1891, when Emilio Moro began farming vineyards along the Duero River.

Built over generations, the estate helped shape the modern identity of Ribera del Duero, focusing almost exclusively on Tinto Fino and on expressing the character of its vineyards rather than following trends.

Today, the Moro family continues that legacy with a clear philosophy: careful vineyard selection, consistency over scale, and wines that balance Ribera’s natural power with structure and precision.
