Jeb Dunnuck's words are worth repeating, "Not enough can be said about the quality that consistently comes from this estate. From the top to the bottom of the range, you can’t go wrong."
Sourced from granitic soils (hence the name) in the birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation, this is hedonistic old vine Syrah with meditative notes. Grapes are 100% destemmed before a slow fermentation in small concrete vats. The wine sees a long fermentation period, lasting over a month, this helps polymerize tannins. The wine is aged between 16 and 18 months in 50% new oak barrels. The wine is literally a rock star now, but will age from 30-50+ years.
Tasting Notes: 100% Syrah. The wine is a very deep garnet. Nose exudes black fruit jam accompanied by smoked and mineral overtones. Smoky and peppered flavors lead the charge followed by tight tannins and a long and clean finish.
The 2016 Saint Joseph Les Granits comes from the Saint Joseph lieu-dit just south of Tournon and was destemmed and brought up in a mix of 25% new demi-muids and Burgundy barrels. Just screaming granite on the nose with its black raspberry, crushed rocks, white pepper, gunpowder, and exotic spices, this beauty hits the palate with full body, ripe, present tannins, beautiful acidity, and an undeniable minerality. Despite all its upfront fruit and texture, it has rock solid structure and will age for two decades. ~95JD
Grown on the east-facing portion of Tournon's lieu-dit Saint-Joseph, the 2016 Saint-Joseph Les Granits is an expressive and wild blend of espresso, black olive, crushed stone and grilled meat. Medium to full-bodied, it's saline and savory, with a rich, silky-textured finish that lingers on the palate. Really impressive stuff. ~94RP
