About the Wine

Founded in 1996, Poggio Nardone shares a border with the Mocali estate in the region of Tavernelle of Montalcino. Although the Ciacci family had owned the property for some time, it was not until Tiziano and Alessandra, then newlyweds, were looking through some old manuscripts that they were able to determine the original boundaries of what had once been a much larger Montalcino vineyard, the majority of which had been overgrown. Since then, they have made it their mission to restore the property to its former glory, using as a guide the notations made by Alessandra’s grandfather of the best planting areas. The estate is modest in size (less than 10 hectares) and its location is ideal, with the combination of high altitude vineyards (approximately 450 meters in elevation) and compact marl and limestone soils. The resulting wines are dense, long-lived reds that can be shy in their youth, but are well worth cellaring.

The vineyards are exposed to the South / West of the Montalcino hill at an altitude of 350 meters, alternating with oak, holm oak, and strawberry trees, characteristic of the natural vegetation of the place, the soil is largely composed of marl and alberese and therefore rich in mineral salts.

The soil and its particular microclimate are very important for the quality of the wine, which with the work in the cellar and the passion of the producer produces a unique wine.

The 2016 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino has been called a 5-star vintage. A 99-point vintage. Radiance personified. This Martoccia Brunello di Montalcino is from that vintage where temperatures, sun, and rain came together perfectly, and it shows in this wine.

Vintage Report from James Suckling:

"If you ever wanted a Brunello di Montalcino for your cellar to age for decades, then buy the 2016 vintage when the wines come out in the market in January 2021. The 2016 vintage marks the second great year in a row for Brunello di Montalcino following the sensational 2015, which is currently on the market."

Aging: 3 years in Franch oak barrels

Reviews

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino offers richness and extra fruit density with fleshy cherry and plum followed by spice, tar, tobacco, and campfire ash. This expression embraces a contemporary taste profile with fermentation and aging in oak. This results in softness and textural richness that feels especially velvety and snug in this vintage. There is some tightness on the tannins but that should subside within the next few years. Some 10,000 bottles were produced. ~94 Wine Advocate

Intensely earthy nose of dried porcini mushrooms and truffles. Perfumed, fresher fruit on the palate with red cherries, cranberries, and some dark chocolate. This is a well structured, full red with grippy yet fine-grained and pretty tannins. Give it a few years to soften. Drink after 2024. ~94 James Suckling

Good presence of ripe cherries and plums that open the sensory scene of this young Brunello well blended with currants, raspberries, and lemon peel. Medium-bodied, elegant and relaxed, it shows a delicate concentration of polyphenolic compounds and a slender finish but of undoubted quality. Better from 2021. ~94 Raffaele Vecchione

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and brooding expression of the vintage. Crushed plums, black cherry, tobacco, and moist soil tones form up in the glass. It’s velvety-smooth, cast across a medium-bodied frame with balancing acids and a polished display of blackberry, balsamic spice, and inner violet florals. The density and concentration of primary fruits combined with the wine’s fine tannin profile promises many years of development. That said, there’s something deeply alluring, almost animalistic, and slightly rustic about the 2016 Poggio Nardone that keeps me coming back to the glass. ~93 Vinous Media
