About The Wine

Dom Pérignon is only available as a vintage. Only the best grapes are selected. Each vintage is unique and reinterprets the unique character of the seasons. Dom Pérignon reinvents itself with each vintage, always taking risks. Even to the point of not declaring a vintage.

In the 17th century, the monk Dom Pierre Pérignon nurtured an ambition to create “the best wine in the world”. This bold and visionary mind even went as far as to earn himself a place at the table of the Sun King, who was won over by the quality of his wine.

Three centuries later, Dom Pérignon perpetuates this exceptional artisan’s vision and work, and he is now considered to be the spiritual father of Champagne. Dom Pérignon vintages are produced using the best grapes on the estate. Each one is a unique creation with a style and an identity that are unique to its vintage: it is down to the Chef de Cave to decide if the vintage will be declared.

This vision is tangible through the subtle balance that characterizes the House Champagnes – an alliance of ripeness, vibrancy, lightness, and intensity – giving the wine the potential to age with suppleness and elegance.

The spring was warm and dry, with no significant frost and near-perfect flowering. The summer was marked by long sunny periods, interspersed with regular cloudy and rainy spells. The unexpectedly perfect weather just before the harvest compensated for the heavy rains of late August and early September. The vines were in good health, and the dehydration of the grape berries helped them reach new heights of ripeness. The harvest began between September 12 and 28.

The first hints of fresh almond and harvest aromas immediately open up into preserved lemon and dried fruits, the whole rounded off by darker smoky and toasted qualities. The presence of the wine on the palate is immediately captivating. Paradoxically concentrated yet creamy, it is energetic and warm in the mouth, focusing on the fruit, then gradually taking on more profound bass notes. The whole holds its note perfectly, intensively, with just a subtle, elegant hint of underlying bitterness.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

An edgy Dom Perignon with intense and singular aromas of lemons, toast and botanicals. Medium-bodied with a dense center palate and a vivid and rocking finish. Tight, muscular bubbles frame this nicely. Tense. Developing well in the bottle. 62% chardonnay and 38% pinot noir. 4.5 g/L dosage. Drink now or hold. ~98 James Suckling

The 2017 Dom Pérignon is just as stunning as it was last year, if not more so. What a wine! Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and chalk soar out of the glass. The 2017 is like a slightly more refined version of the 2002, another year in which the Chardonnays were quite opulent. In 2017, Chardonnay accounts for 61% of the blend, very high for Dom Pérignon. Over the last year, the 2017 has gained mid-palate creaminess and has just come together beautifully. Sadly, production is tiny, so much so that the 2017 is expected to be in the market for just a few months before the maison transitions to the 2018. ~98 Vinous Media

Of the two releases—the 2017 and the 2018—the 2017 Dom Pérignon is the deeper and more structurally endowed wine, unfurling from the glass with a complex bouquet of orange peel, dried apricot and burnt buttered toast, mingling with nuances of dried flowers, toasted hazelnut and cacao bean, all strongly singed with the house’s signature smoky reduction. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich core of fruit. Its darker, open-knit profile is animated by a pillowy mousse, vibrant acidity and attractively bitter, structuring phenolics that assert themselves on a long, resonant finish. This is a superb achievement for a vintage that required uncompromising selection, as acetic rot began to intrude upon the Pinot Noir grapes despite otherwise favorable conditions until mid-August. The fact that it represents the smallest Dom Pérignon release by volume should not mislead readers into complacency; indeed, I would much sooner own several bottles of the 2017 than divide my allocation with the 2018. A blend of 61% Chardonnay and 39% Pinot Noir, it was disgorged in March 2024 with a dosage of five grams per liter and will offer considerable complexity and generosity out of the gates. ~95 Wine Advocate

A vivid Champagne, offering a finely detailed mousse, with a toasty overtone to the flavors of crushed white raspberry and white cherry fruit, grapefruit pith, toast point and oyster shell, all defined by chiseled, lemony acidity. A fine example from a challenging vintage. Drink now through 2037. ~94 Wine Spectator
