About the Wine

If an exquisite red wine that is robust, solid, and completely harmonious sounds like the Pinot Noir for you look no further than this Echezeaux Grand Cru. Louis Latour is the iconic name in Burgundy. Louis Latour is located in the village of Aloxe-Corton. With the largest holding of Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy (68 acres), the philosophy has always been to maximize the quality of the grapes to produce great wines. The care and attention to detail seen in their sustainably farmed vineyards are carried over into their winemaking where commitment to traditional and manual techniques brings out the absolute best in all of their incredibly age-worthy and food-friendly wines.

Louis Latour stands out among its competitors as it controls every aspect of production from grape to bottle. The winery operates its own vineyard, nursery, forests for oak sourcing of their barrels, printing shop, and even unique bottle shape.

Today, Maison Latour operates 25 family-owned and managed companies around the world. The winery produces wine from 140 appellations. The winery also owns and operates Maison Simmoney-Febve in Chablis and Maison Henry Fessy, which remarkably produces wines in nine out of ten Cru Beaujolais. The winery also produces white wine in the Ardeche (near Cotes du Rhone) and Pinot Noir at Dom. de Valmolsinne in Southern France.

In the US, Louis Latour operates as its own importer, cutting out the middleman, which mirrors BHW's own cost-efficiency.

Jean Charles Thomas has been the winemaker at Louis Latour for 32 years. Prior to that, he apprenticed with Jean Pierre Jobard for more than 10 years. Jean Charles is widely considered one of the finest winemakers in the world, with unrivaled experience and expertise with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. During his tenure at Louis Latour, he has produced more than 40 wines rated 95+.

‘Echézeaux’ was originally owned by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux, who also developed the neighboring Clos de Vougeot in 1109. Echezeaux was developed by laypeople who lived nearby. Echezeaux is both an AOC (since 1937) and a small portion has the designation of Grand Cru. Due to the arcane rules around land transfer in France, more than 80 vineyard owners divide the 86 acre vineyard. The most famous and prestigious owner is Domaine de la Romanee Conti, which produces wines that sell for thousands of dollars a bottleBurgundy is the perfect choice for any celebration as it is the perfect partner to any so many dishes. It is divine with charcuterie, cheeses, and dried fruit, as well as roasted meat and the quintessential boeuf bourguignon.  Decant and drink now or cellar, this wine will not disappoint.

Reviews

This has very attractive rose-petal and rose-hip notes with wild herbs and a swathe of fresh red cherries. The palate carries a succulent, juicy, and very fresh array of fine red cherries and a long and fresh, lacy finish with deep flavors. Try from 2022. ~95 James Suckling

A taut, densely woven style, this features black cherry, blackberry, earth, and iron flavors, framed by toasty, spicy oak.Muscular but corralled by vivid acidity and mouth-coating tannins. Best from 2024 through 2048.35 cases imported. ~94 Wine Spectator

An overtly spicy and exotic nose features notes of wood, menthol, cassis, violet, and jasmine tea. The highly seductive, velvety, and caressing medium-bodied flavors contrast mildly with the youthfully austere, serious, and sneaky long finish. This firm effort is also quite promising. ~93 Burghound

I was skeptical about the 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru when I tasted it from barrel, but it has rounded out nicely with further élevage and performed well from bottle. Mingling aromas of raspberries and cassis with hints of grilled squab and toasty new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, succulent and fleshy, built around powdery tannins and concluding with good length on the finish. ~92 Wine Advocate
