About the Wine 

Introduced with the 2015 vintage, Passi di Orma represents this venerated Bolgheri producer's second wine and the winery's first Bolgheri DOC. The name, which translates as "Steps from Orma" offers an accurate description of what lies inside the bottle-- a powerful and structured, yet slightly more accessible variant on Orma's namesake wine. If you are looking for Super Tuscan quality, but don't want to pay Super Tuscan prices, look no further.

The Orma estate is located in the district of Castagneto Carducci within the Bolgheri DOC, and is home to only 5.5 hectares of well-exposed and carefully tended vineyard. Plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc are brought to full ripeness by the brilliant summer sunshine for which this part of Tuscany is renowned. Orma is said to be ‘well-born’ due to the estate’s location next to Tenuta dell’Ornellaia which sells for 8x as much as this wine. Orma sits amid towering cypress trees along the famed Via Bolgherese. With a profile that finds equilibrium between power and finesse, Orma reflects both the unique terroir and the ambitious spirit of its territory.

Aging: 6 months in French barriques

Tasting Notes

Deep inky purple in its youth, Passi di Orma is accessible with soft, velvety tannin and heaps of ripe plum and blackberry, but it is also structured and serious.  Layers of decadent fruit are underscored by coffee, vanilla bean, and macchia mediterranea. A harmonious finish reaffirms the wine's poise and power. This is a second wine that does not settle for second place.

The 2017 Passi di Orma is a lovely second wine from Orma. Sweet red cherry, mint, blood orange and pomegranate are all pushed forward. Silky and pliant, with lovely fruit purity, this radiant, juicy Maremma red is absolutely delicious. It should drink well for at least another handful of years. ~91 Antonio Galloni
