About The Wine

Perched on the eastern hills of Rutherford at elevations reaching 875 to 990 feet above sea level, Sloan Estate commands 40 acres of Napa Valley hillside, with just 13 acres under vine. Those vines were planted in 1997 in a mineral-rich mosaic of fractured volcanic rock, sandy loam, and white tufa soils — terrain that produces fruit of singular concentration and precision. The estate was established by Seattle businessman Stuart Sloan, who assembled one of Napa's most formidable production teams: winemaker Martha McClellan, legendary vineyard manager David Abreu, and consulting oenologist Michel Rolland.

In 2011, Sutong Pan and his daughter Jenny Pan acquired the estate from Sloan, preserving the entire winemaking team and doubling down on the mission of producing some of California's most collector-coveted wines. The 2002 and 2007 vintages achieved perfect scores from Robert Parker — a distinction that cemented Sloan's cult status.

The Proprietary Red is Sloan Estate's flagship, produced since the inaugural 2000 vintage and built from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The 2017 vintage was shaped in part by the Northern California wildfires, which prompted earlier picking and fewer barrel ferments — choices that, far from diminishing the wine, resulted in a vintage of remarkable lift, precision, and early accessibility.

Winemaker Martha McClellan has called the ability to make exceptional wine under challenging circumstances the true art of the craft, and the 2017 is a compelling argument in her favor.

Eye: Deep garnet-purple; vivid and luminous in the glass.

Nose: Blueberry and blackberry lead, layered with black currant, dried florals, and a subtle pine thread. Suggestions of chocolate, cedar, gravelly earth, and Indian spice emerge with air — complex and precise rather than opulent.

Palate: Full-bodied with polished, linear tannins that integrate seamlessly into the fruit. Black cherry, cassis, licorice, and lavender are framed by fresh acidity and a firm mineral spine. The 2017 shows the elegant, reserved character of the vintage — built for balance and grace rather than sheer density — with a long, perfumed finish.

Drinking Window: Drinking well now; best 2024–2038. The vintage's earlier-picked fruit gives it accessibility in youth, though firm structure rewards another 5–10 years in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Wonderful aromas of blueberries, blackberries, mushrooms, pine and blackcurrants. Some violets, too. Full-bodied, yet so refined and polished with wonderful fruit and a linear tannin structure that integrates beautifully into the wine. It’s so balanced and beautiful. Hard not to drink now, but better after 2023. ~ 98 James Suckling

The 2017 Proprietary Red brings everything up a solid notch. Dense purple/plum-hued, with gorgeous, Graves-like nose of blackcurrants, chocolate, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and gravelly earth, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a polished, elegant texture, building yet sweet tannins, and a great finish. Very much in the style of the 2017 vintage with its nicely concentrated, elegant, reserved yet endearing style, it's going to drink nicely for 20-25 years.~ 97 Jeb Dunnuck

The deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Proprietary Red sails out of the glass with open-knit, compelling scents of Black Forest cake, blackberry pie and black currant jelly with suggestions of Indian spices, garrigue, rose oil and sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is richly fruited and jam-packed with opulent black fruit preserves and exotic spice layers, framed by a wicked backbone of freshness and plush, well-managed tannins, finishing with impressive length and perfume. ~96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Sloan is very nicely done. As is typical of the year, Sloan is on the lighter side in 2017, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Black cherry, spice, licorice, lavender and chocolate open with a bit of time in the glass. Soft, succulent and quite gracious, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. I suspect it will always retain some of the nervous tension that is to be expected for a wine made from fruit picked a bit earlier than would have been optimal and with fewer barrel ferments, both choices imposed by the fires that year. ~ 94 Vinous Media
