About the Wine

Aurore de Dauzac Margaux is the second wine from the 5th Growth Classified, Château Dauzac. This wine is crafted with vines located on a special geological vein, with soils composed of fine gravel and sand. The result is a spectacular, crispy, and intensely fruity wine.

This Château dates from 1190, when Pétrus d'Auzac inherited the land from Richard I, King of England. Over the years, the superb wines from Dauzac began to acquire an excellent reputation, becoming one of the favorites of the aristocracy. This led them to be recognized as the 5th Growth Grand Cru Classe in the Official Bordeaux Classification of 1855.

Later in 1924, the Château passed into the hands of the same owners of the 2nd Growth Ducru-Beaucaillou. It was thanks to this family that Château Dauzac adopted the yellow color on its labels, a strong identity that is preserved to this day.

Throughout history, Château Dauzac has passed through different owners, from French businessmen to insurance companies. All of them have achieved important strides within the vineyard, winemaking, and cellar, and all these efforts are clearly shown in the result of the outstanding wines that are produced at Château Dauzac to this day. As of 2020, it became the property of the successful French businessman, Christian Roulleau.

The Dauzac vineyard is made up of more than 120 acres, of which 111 are in the Margaux appellation and the rest are located in the Haut-Médoc appellation. The vineyards are mostly made up of Cab Sauvignon, followed by Merlot and Petit Verdot. Château Dauzac has started to implement biodynamic principles, in addition to highly integrated agriculture and organic practices.

Éric Boissenot is the Rockstar wine consultant of this Château. He consults at forty of the Classified Châteaux including Lafite, Margaux, Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases, and Ducru Beaucaillou.

2018 Aurore de Dauzac Margaux was born in an epic vintage for Bordeaux’ Left Bank. 2018 was blessed with 96 Points by Vinous Media, Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. The last one states that “the best reds are dense and tannic, with terrific drive and definition.”

Aging: 12 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes: 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot. Garnet with violet reflections. The expression of slightly floral red fruit is delicate. The palate is round and supple on the attack, beautiful, very balanced concentration with notes of refined black fruits. A good length that stays fresh. This wine pairs beautifully with White meats, game, red meats, cheeses.

Reviews

Enjoyable, well-brushed tannins. There is clear power here, real tension through the palate, and lovely deep black pepper spice. Impressive and ready to approach within the next few years. ~92 Decanter

Blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark-chocolate aromas follow through to a medium to full body, with firm, velvety tannins and a savory finish. Needs two or three years to soften. Drink after 2023. ~92 James Suckling

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate ocher rim lightening. Delicate nuances of precious wood, tobacco, cassis, and blackberries, some licorice underlaid, a hint of nougat. Juicy, elegant, fine sweetness, ripe, well-developed tannins, a touch of chocolate on the finish, already accessible, has aging potential. ~92 Falstaff

Harvested from the best parts of the Dauzac vineyard for Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has ripe tannins and juicy, jammy black fruits. It still shows the wood aging, but this should disappear into the richness of the wine because of the weight of the fruit. Drink from 2024. Suitable for vegans. ~91 Wine Enthusiast
