About The Wine

Kimberly Jones spent years brokering Napa's cult Cabernets. A 2006 trip to Maury rerouted her. She found century-old vines the local government was paying growers to rip out and replace with apricot trees, because the region's dessert-wine market had collapsed. She bought six hectares to save them, and named the wine Courier: a messenger for what those rescued vines still had to say.

Maury sits in the foothills of the Pyrenees, a few miles from the Spanish border, in French Catalonia. For a century it was known for sweet fortified wine, not dry reds. The soil is black schist — flaky, brutal, and among the hottest, driest ground in France. Miserable for farming. Exactly what pushes old Grenache to its best.

The fruit comes off two schist parcels: Carignan near a hundred years old, Grenache around seventy, all dry-farmed. Yields are punishing, roughly a quarter-ton an acre, a fraction of normal, so every berry lands concentrated. Winemaker Richard Case ages it three years in large old barrels, then rests it in bottle before release. It reaches you already resolved: fine tannins, savory depth, no hard edges.

This is the concentration and savory lift people pay Châteauneuf prices for, from a grower who rescued the vines herself. Only a few hundred cases exist. Open one with lamb and taste what almost got bulldozed.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2018 Rouge, 70% Old Vine Grenache and 30% Old Vine Carignan, is medium garnet in color. It springs from the glass with notes of plum preserves and blueberry pie followed by hints of Indian spices, unsmoked cigars, and sandalwood. The full-bodied palate is rich and plush, with loads of anise sparks giving shimmer to the decadent black fruits, finishing long and peppery. ~95 The Wine Independent

~ 95 The Wine Palate

A blend of Grenache and Carignan aged three years in barrel and two years in bottle, the 2018 Côtes Catalanes offers red and black fruits, leather, and pepper notes. Medium-bodied and balanced on the palate, it has an elegant and seamless character with fine tannins and beautiful complexity, gaining saddle leather and pepper nuances with air. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
