About The Wine

Gran Enemigo El Cepillo is the single-vineyard bottling from one of Argentina's most uncompromising projects — a collaboration between Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena. The name translates to "The Great Enemy," a nod to the winemakers' shared belief: "We are our own worst enemy." That internal standard shows in the work. Only 7,200 bottles produced.

This is 100% Cabernet Franc from the El Cepillo vineyard at 1,300 meters in Uco Valley's San Carlos district. High-altitude Cab Franc from Argentina's most serious zone — the kind of elevation that delivers phenolic intensity and brightness most New World reds can't touch. The 2018 vintage was low-yielding and dry, which amplified the wine's signature curry note and stony character. Wine Advocate called it "the most radical, stony El Enemigo Gualtallary cabernet franc ever tasted."

Vigil aged the wine in ancient 4,000-liter oak foudres for fifteen months — old wood that adds structure without drowning the fruit. The result is a wine with sweet black fruit on the nose, vanilla and chocolate from the oak, then a mouthfeel that shifts: structured tannins, natural acidity, exceptional length. James Suckling noted "more bones than flesh" — full-bodied but built on fine-grained, almost powdery tannins. Dark cherries, white pepper, black olives, a hint of paprika. The kind of tension and density that makes this more than fruit in a bottle.

97 points from Wine Advocate. 97 from James Suckling. 94 from Vinous. This is what high-altitude Argentine Cab Franc looks like when two perfectionists refuse to compromise.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The nose of the 2018 Gran Enemigo El Cepillo Single Vineyard, from a low-yielding and drier year, is full of curry, a note that was a constant across the three vintages I tasted together, but it tends to be stronger in low-yielding and dry years like this. It's also floral and comes through as aromatic and a little exotic, in a good way, with elegance, persistence and very pure flavors. It has fine-grained tannins, great acidity and balance. 7,200 bottles. All these single-vineyard bottlings mature in ancient 4,000-liter oak foudres for some 15 months. ~97 Wine Advocate

Ripe plums, blackberries, dark cherries, pine cones, mint chocolate, cloves and dried herbs on the nose. Hints of black pepper, too. Medium-bodied with fine, well-integrated tannins. There’s a dark spiciness to this. Well structured and muscular with fantastic intensity. Try in 2024. ~97 James Suckling

There is a hint of the characteristic Malbec sweetness in this example from El Cepillo, located at the southern end of the Uco Valley. Yet, that is all it is—just a hint. The acidity is dense and penetrating; it engages with the flavors, lending them vigor and freshness while simultaneously tempering the inherent sweetness of grapes grown under the Uco desert sun, thereby minimizing that sugary note and allowing the red wine to feel refreshing. Of course, there is more to it than just acidity and fruit; one also detects herbal and floral notes, as well as sweet spices. It is a fresh, intense, and linear wine that is ready to drink now, though we believe it likely has the potential to evolve—in terms of both flavor and texture—for another five to ten years. ~97 Descorchados

Pretty and inviting on the nose with gorgeous aromas of floral violet, cassis and completed with a lifted, delicate liquorice note. The palate is graced with deep herb, pepper, crunchy red fruit and graceful, silky tannins. ~97 Decanter

THE PRODUCER

El Enemigo Winery

El Enemigo (formally Bodega Aleanna) is the passion project of Alejandro Vigil, longtime chief winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata, and Adrianna Catena, an Oxford-trained historian and youngest daughter of Nicolás Catena Zapata, who founded the winery in 2009 with a goal of challenging and redefining Argentinian winemaking by blending the country's youthful winemaking culture with Europe's rich viticultural heritage, driven by a shared love of Cabernet Franc and an ambition to produce high-altitude wines rivaling the best of Bordeaux. The vineyards sit at elevations between 930 and 1,470 meters on limestone, rock, and clay soils, planted to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Bonarda, Chardonnay, and Malbec across Mendoza's Uco Valley and Gualtallary. Their techniques blend old and new — fashionable concrete eggs alongside 100-year-old Alsatian oak foudres shipped in from Italy, re-toasted and reassembled in tradition — and the wines have earned serious critical acclaim, with scores of 99 and 100 awarded by James Suckling and Robert Parker for the Gran Enemigo Chacayes and Gualtallary bottlings respectively. The name itself carries symbolic weight: "El Enemigo" nods to the idea that at the end of any journey, the only battle truly remembered is the one fought within — the original enemy — and the wines are meant as a tribute to that inner struggle that shapes who we are
