About The Wine

Cristal turns 150 this year, and the vintage that marks it is not a typical Cristal.

Louis Roederer made the first one in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II. It is made only from the house's own vineyards. The usual source is 45 parcels across seven grand cru villages, all on chalk. In most good years those 45 parcels are the whole wine.

2018 did not cooperate. The summer was hotter and drier than 2003, which had held the record in Champagne. The fruit came in ripe and healthy, with lower acids than usual. Picking started August 27.

Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon has run the cellar since 1999, and his answer was to look wider. He went to 57 parcels in Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Ay, Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant, hunting for freshness. He put his best Chardonnay into Cristal, so Roederer made no vintage Blanc de Blancs in 2018. He cut the oak ferments to 28 percent. There was no malolactic fermentation.

The blend is 57 percent Pinot Noir and 43 percent Chardonnay, finished at 7 grams of dosage. Pinot gives it weight and a fine grip. The Chardonnay keeps the chalk and the salt in front. The warmth of the year shows as orchard fruit and breadth, and the finish stays dry and saline.

57% Pinot Noir, 43% Chardonnay, 7 g/L dosage, 28% vinified in oak, no malolactic. Yellow apple, pear and nectarine lead, with honeysuckle, white pepper and a little bread dough behind them. Full-bodied for Champagne, with orchard fruit, lemon curd and grapefruit over a firm line of acidity. The mousse is fine and persistent, and the finish is long, chalky and saline. Drinking now. Wine Spectator's window runs through 2048 and Vinous holds it to 2068.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The 2018 Cristal opens a new chapter for Roederer. The Cristal estate is composed of 45 parcels. In better vintages, most of the 45 parcels are used for the blend. The 2018 vintage brought with it elevated ripeness and generally low acids. Longtime Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon was forced to cast his gaze wider, to look for parcels that offered a touch of freshness. Lécaillon expanded his palette to 57 parcels. The result is a Cristal unlike any other I have tasted. Orchard fruit, dried flowers, spice, chalk and herbs are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. Floral and savory overtones are quite distinctive. Lécaillon reduced oak ferments, racked very quickly after fermentation and used all his best Chardonnay lots for Cristal, so much so that there is no Blanc de Blancs. He bottled earlier than normal and chose a crown capsule with a liner that allows less oxygen transfer than the norm here. Taken together, those choices paid off handsomely. In tasting, the 2018 is positively stunning. Its linear energy and brilliance are a bit reminiscent of the 2014, but its flavor profile is completely different from any Cristal I can remember tasting. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. ~98+ Vinous Media

A well-tailored Champagne, with density, length and a firm spine of vivid acidity. Though this is firmly structured, there’s a sense of finesse. The crisp, delicate mousse is a swathe of lacy texture enmeshing the fine frame as this carries flavors of black currant, lemon curd, chalky mineral and biscuit. The finish is long and fragrant, echoing fruit, toast, mineral and spices. Harmonious and enjoyable today, but this will cellar nicely -- potentially longer than some of its peers from the vintage Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Drink now through 2048. 3,250 cases imported. ~98 Wine Spectator

A very structure Cristal with aromas of white pepper, bread dough, pie crust, pear tart and a hint of flint. Full-bodied with bitter grapefruit, apricot and lemon flavors. The bubbles turn fine and driving, giving it length and intensity. From organically grown grapes. Will age nicely. Drink or hold. ~97 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer, a family-owned Champagne house since 1776, has built its legacy on exceptional quality and meticulous vineyard management. Originally founded as Dubois Père & Fils, the company was renamed in 1833 after Louis Roederer inherited it. Over the years, Louis Roederer’s vision and commitment to excellence elevated the house to legendary status. Rather than relying on outside grape sources, Louis Roederer acquired some of the finest Grand Cru vineyards in Champagne, giving them complete control over the quality of their wines.

With over two centuries of winemaking experience, Louis Roederer continues to lead the Champagne world. The introduction of Cristal in 1876, originally crafted for Tsar Alexander II, marked a defining moment in Champagne history. Cristal became known as the ultimate expression of luxury, a cuvée that continues to be revered by collectors and connoisseurs around the globe. After the Russian Revolution, Cristal was released internationally in 1945, cementing its status as a world-class Champagne
