Located in Oakville along highway 29 Nickel & Nickel constructs each individual wine from the ground up at their ultra-modern winery specifically suited to producing small-lot, single-vineyard wines. Nickel & Nickel is the sister winery of Napa luminary Far Niente and the formation began in 1997 after many of the Far Niente vineyards began to demonstrated extraordinary potential. Over the years, this effort has proved more than successful as Nickel & Nickel continues to be the one and only standard-bearer for exquisite single-vineyard wines in the United States.
State Ranch is located northeast of the town of Yountville. The 23-acre vineyard is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road and consists of both older and younger vines. Many excellent wines are produced from this area, in part due to the rocky, loam soil which has excellent drainage throughout the year. The vines, as well as the clusters, are moderate in size and the vineyard gets full sun throughout the day. As the young vines mature, the estate harvests many different clones to make the final wine.
The turbulent growing seasons for upcoming Napa vintages, 2019 and 2020 have produced more questions than answers. The quality of these wines will be heavily scrutinized and reviewed under every critic's microscope. The time is ripe to stock up on quality vintages like2015, 2016, and 2018. The opportunities to capture wines from previous years are limited.

Tasting Notes: Red Wine. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. From the outset, this is one powerful, deeply expressive Cabernet with heady black currant, plum, and cedar aromas leading into a big, juicy entry. Layered currant and black cherry flavors are accented by elegant clove notes. Bold, coating tannins frame the entire wine, and hints of wet slate add dimension to a dark, brooding finish.
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is redolent of chocolate-covered cherries, blackberry preserves, and black currant jelly with touches of wild sage, cast iron pan, and cardamom with a waft of cumin seed. Full-bodied, the palate bursts with crunchy black fruit and loads of spicy accents, supported by firm grainy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and lively ~95 Wine Advocate
Attractive aromas of blackcurrant and blueberry with some dark chocolate and hazelnut. It’s full-bodied and juicy with lots of fruit and hazelnut at the end. Better in 2023. ~94 James Suckling
