About the Wine
Maipo Valley in Chile is one of the greatest wine regions in all of South America and home to some of the best red wines this country has to offer.
This region, also known as the “Bordeaux of South America”, produces first-class red wines that are highly praised by some of the most respected wine critics in the world. To quote Tim Atkin “There aren’t many New World vineyards with the Maipo Valley’s pedigree.”
2015 Tabali 'Talud' Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the DOM Vineyard in Maipo Valley. This vineyard is placed on a gentle slope located in soils of colluvial origin with a large number of angled stones. The low fertility of this type of soil makes the production of grapes extremely restricted, making it a perfect place to produce top-notch Cabs.
Tabalí has an clear focus on quality over quantity. The winery is a small-scale, exclusive, family winery focused on detail. It is built in such a way that the fruit and wine are transported by gravity. The winery aims to avoid any unnecessary pumping and relies on nature to do the work wherever possible.
Felipe Müller, Tabalí’s winemaker since 2006, was born and raised in Santiago, Chile’s capital. Today, at the age of 41, he is considered one of the country´s most influential and important winemakers.
In 2001 he joined Viña De Martino as the second winemaker, in charge of viticulture and the vinification for red and white wines. In this winery, he worked with winemaker Marcelo Retamal, and formed a bold and renowned "Wine Dupla". Together they discovered new wines, studied various valleys and regions of Chile, and vinify grapes from 350 vineyards throughout the country.
Felipe also has work experience in France at two famous Chateaux Grand Cru Classé in Saint Emilion: Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere and Chateau La Mondotte.
Felipe Müller was named ‘Best Winemaker of the Year’ in the sixteenth version of “Guía de Vinos de Chile 2010”, Chile’s oldest and most prestigious wine industry publication. This distinction was an important recognition for the enthusiasm, passion, and dedication he puts in crafting wines. “Wine is my passion and an important part of my life. I feel capable of leveraging the knowledge I’ve built throughout these many years", says Felipe.
In the year 2011, Felipe was appointed Manager Director, keeping his position as Chief Winemaker. From then Felipe was not only responsible for the quality of the wines but also for the global strategy of the company.
In January 2014 Felipe Müller was chosen ‘Best Young Winemaker’ (next to Aurelio Montes who was chosen Best Senior Winemaker).
Aging: 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has a very elegant and very fresh nose, a lot of black fruit that gives it great character and uniqueness, the French barrel is subtly assembled providing great complexity. In the mouth it has very good concentration and excellent tannins, soft, silky, and firm. Great balance and very fresh, where the fruit has a great presence, the cassis, black cherries, and spices being the most present. Long and very persistent finish.
According to Felipe Müller, winemaker at Tabalí, the vineyard where this Talud comes from, in the Maipo Costa, has a moderate climate, with constant breezes that lower the temperature. Unlike the Andean Cabernets from Maipo Alto (an obvious comparison), this one doesn't have that strong herbal side and even less that menthol tone. Instead, the focus here is on fruity flavors, red and blue fruits that unfold elegantly in the mouth. There is something in common with the Cabernets from the Andes Mountains, however, and it is the texture that, in both cases, is smooth, very refined. ~95 Descorchados

The 2018 Talud Cabernet Sauvignon has intense Maipo character, minty and balsamic and with a soft palate with round tannins. This was produced with fruit from their DOM vineyard in Maipo that was planted in 1999 some 25 kilometers away from the sea in a less warm zone. It's juicy and expressive, tasty and fresh, with 14.3% alcohol and good and integrated acidity. 54,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2020.
Tabalí produces around one million bottles from their different vineyards in Limarí and Dom in Maipo. The whites are very sharp and with moderate alcohol and high acidity, and the reds are rounder but still very balanced. ~92 Wine Advocate
