About The Wine

Chateau Barde-Haut, located in the prestigious Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, has become a beacon of innovation and quality in Bordeaux. Acquired in 2000 by Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, the estate has undergone a remarkable transformation, with sustainable practices and modern, eco-conscious winery facilities designed by renowned architects.

Under the guidance of winemaker Hélène Garcin-Lévêque, Barde-Haut has elevated its reputation, embracing cutting-edge techniques and a deep respect for terroir.

The 2019 vintage, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, is a prime example of the estate's commitment to excellence. The wine is crafted from a 17-hectare vineyard perched on a limestone plateau, where the unique terroir imparts balance and elegance to the final product.

Aged for 18 months in French oak, the 2019 is a wine of superb structure, offering great aging potential. Critics have hailed this vintage as a new benchmark for Barde-Haut, highlighting its refined expression of Saint-Émilion’s distinctive character. With its combination of power and finesse, the 2019 Chateau Barde-Haut is poised to become a standout in any collection.

Aging: 80–100% new French oak barrels for approximately 18 months.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Smoke, licorice, black plums, dark cherries, violets and 5 spice aromatics gets you to take notice. On the palate, it is even better with all of its silky textured, sweet, energetic red fruits. The finish lingers with a growing portfolio of dark red and black fruits with an endnote of dark chocolate and espresso. There is sweetness, length and complexity you can taste and feel. Drink from 2024-2038. ∼95 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

Attractive black-fruit and berry character with some chocolate and toasted-hazelnut undertones. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Lots of flavor. Lots of polish. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024. ∼95 James Suckling

The 2019 Barde-Haut is a super-classic wine from the estate. Plush, dark and explosive, the 2019 races across the palate. This sumptuous, exotic wine balances the richness of the year, with terrific energy. Inky blue/purplish fruit, espresso, mocha, licorice and cloves are all kicked up in this potent, extroverted Saint-Émilion. As always, Barde-Haut is one of the more flamboyant wines in the appellation. All the elements come together effortlessly in this gorgeous 2019 from Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and Patrice Lévêque. ∼95 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Classified estate right next to Troplong Mondot, with real emphasis on the salinity of limestone, wrapped in delicious black fruits, soft spices and persistent smoked oak. This is an excellent wine, extremely well put together with clear ageing potential. ∼94 Decanter

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Barde-Haut comes skipping out of the glass with bright, cheery black plums, Morello cherries, black raspberries and mulberries scents plus suggestions of dusty soil, cinnamon stick, pencil shavings and lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has wonderful energy, with a lively line of freshness and well-played, rounded tannins, finishing with an invigorating lift. ∼92-94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
