About The Wine

Just over 1 mile from the world-renowned Château Margaux you will find Château Labegorce. These two magnificent Châteaux share great terroir similarities, but luckily for us, what they don’t share is the price!

The history of Château Labegorce dates to the 14th century, being one of the largest (and most beautiful) wine estates in the entire Médoc, and even though during the French Revolution, there was an order to divide the land into three different estates, Chateau Labegorce continued to be the largest of all, with more than 600 acres of land.

If there’s a word that can describe Château Labegorce is “history”. The classic castle, which until today remains the flagship of the property, was built in 1821.

Since 1989, this Château has been owned by the Perrodo family. Hubert Perrodo was a key piece in the great growth and positioning of this Château; He was responsible for pooling the lands that had been divided during the revolution and acquiring a few more acres. Currently, Nathalie, Hubert's daughter, is the director of this outstanding project, and with the help of Marjolaine Maurice, she has managed to revolutionize and modernize this property from the vineyard to the winery, always protecting the traditions and history of the place.

The Laborgoce vineyard is comprised of over 170 acres specifically planted with the beloved Bordeaux Blend: Cab Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, and Petit Verdot. The vast majority of these vines are approximately 30 years old, however, there are some vines of more than 100 years old that are still preserved. The terroir is magnificent! I mean, what else can you expect from 1st Growth’s neighbor other than pure perfection? It is composed mainly of gravel, clay, sand, and limestone.

2019 was an outstanding vintage for this region. It was awarded 97 points by Vinous Media who said it is "Unquestionably a Left Bank vintage. The sweet spot is in Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, where so many wines are exceptional to profound, at all levels in the hierarchy of terroirs."

Aging: 16 to 18 months in 40% new oak barrels.

Mouthfeel & Acidity

A blend of 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Château Labégorce is a rich and opulent Margaux. It opens with vibrant aromas of blackberries, blueberries, tobacco, and a touch of spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and beautifully integrated oak. Dark chocolate, plums, and espresso linger on the long finish. This wine is approachable now but will improve with age. Drink from 2025 to 2047.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Gorgeous notes of red, blue, and black fruits as well as sandalwood, tobacco leaf, chocolate, and spicy notes emerge from the 2019 Château Labégorce, one of the richer, more opulent, and straight-up sexy wines in the vintage. A blend of 46% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all raised in 40% new oak, it's medium to full-bodied, has beautifully integrated oak, a stacked mid-palate, and one heck of a great finish. Drink this rich, sensationally textured Margaux any time over the coming two decades. It’s unquestionably in the same league as the 2015, 2016, and 2018. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Labégorce was the first vintage vinified in the new cellar and also the first to use Cabernet Franc from the north part of the appellation, on more limestone soils, a massal selection from an organic producer in the south of France. Matured in 40% new oak, this has a voluminous, multifaceted bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and perhaps more rose petal than violet at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, very well balanced, and a little spicier than I found from barrel, leading to a detailed, tensile finish. ~94 Neal Martin, Vinous Media

A brilliant wine with heart and personality. This captures so much Left Bank signature, as is often the case with Labégorce. Slate texture, grippy tannins that tug through the palate, holding tight to the brambled blackberry and cassis fruits laced with hawthorn and raspberry leaf. Great quality. 33% new oak. Harvest September 19 to October 12, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Fresh flowers, wet earth, spice, tobacco wrapper and sweet, red pit fruit aromatics are all over the place. Elegant, soft, and refined on the palate, the wine is just a pleasure to taste with all of its, purity and silky textures that resonate. The finish with its dark chocolate, plums, boysenberry and espresso is a treat as it lingers and fills out on your palate. Give it a few years in the bottle and it is really to be great. Drink from 2025-2047. ~94 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums, espresso, orange chocolate and wet earth. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Rich and creamy with generous ripe-berry and chocolate notes. Walnut and earth notes on the finish. Drink from 2024. ~92 James Suckling

The largest of the Perrodo estates in Margaux, this is a little heavier set and muscular than the Marquis d'Alesme, extremely accomplished and majoring on coffee beans and tobacco alongside blackcurrant fruits. Enjoyable, a little less signature Margaux that its sibling property but this is a delicious gourmet-edged wine, and a brilliant (relatively) value choice in the appellation. ~92 Decanter
