About The Wine

Few American wineries have earned the kind of quiet, lasting reverence that Cristom commands. Founded in 1992 by Paul and Eileen Gerrie on a stretch of volcanic hillside in Oregon's Eola-Amity Hills, the family-owned estate has spent three decades doing one thing exceptionally well — growing Pinot Noir from sites that rival Burgundy's greatest addresses in complexity and soul. Wine & Spirits has named Cristom the #1 Restaurant Pinot Noir producer in the country, not once, but consistently, because the sommeliers and chefs who know wine best keep coming back.

Some wineries chase trends. Cristom chased Burgundy — and it shows in every bottle. Founded in 1992 by engineer-turned-vintner Paul Gerrie and his wife Eileen, Cristom Vineyards is one of Oregon's true Pinot Noir pioneers, built on a friendship with Robert Parker Jr. himself, who helped introduce the Gerries to the traditions of Burgundy and Bordeaux before they ever planted a vine. More than three decades later, second-generation winegrower Tom Gerrie leads the estate alongside winemaker Daniel Estrin, carrying forward a family obsession with site, soil, and patience that has made Cristom a cult name among serious Pinot lovers.

The estate sits in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA of Oregon's Willamette Valley, threaded by the Van Duzer Corridor — a natural wind gap that funnels cool Pacific air straight through the vineyards every afternoon. That constant breeze slows ripening, locks in acidity, and is exactly why Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir is prized for its tension and structure. Layer in the estate's volcanic soils and Cristom's biodynamic, low-intervention farming, and you get fruit with a rare sense of place.

This bottle comes from Louise Vineyard, named for Paul Gerrie's maternal grandmother and one of the first blocks Cristom ever planted. Split by a 150-foot slope into "upper" and "lower" sections, Louise is the estate's lowest-elevation Pinot Noir site, giving it both the earliest and the latest picked fruit of any vintage. It was the first single-vineyard wine Cristom ever released, and nearly thirty years later it's still one of the most collected bottlings in the portfolio.

In the cellar, Cristom does things the hard way on purpose: native-yeast fermentation, a healthy percentage of whole clusters, and manual punch-downs, no shortcuts. It's the same minimalist, Burgundian-leaning approach that's made Cristom a benchmark producer in Oregon, and the Louise Vineyard is a standout even by their standards.

Medium ruby in the glass, this Pinot Noir needs a little time in the glass to fully unfurl its wild red and black berry fruit, laced with notes of prosciutto, aniseed, and potpourri. The palate is seamless and ethereal — light-bodied, silky, and lifted by dark baking spice, with a long, savory finish that lingers. Elegant now, but built to reward patience over the next decade.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

From a vineyard the Gerrie family planted in 1993 that sits around the winery, the 2022 Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard reveals a beautiful woodsy profile, with notes of mossy earth and higher-toned red fruit shining through, with cranberries, darker red fruits, and Asian spices. It has a chiseled structure, with fine compact tannins, a refreshing lift, and notes of tea leaf on its long finish. It’s going to age with grace over the coming 20 years. ~96 Jeb Dunnuck

Dark, broad and full, with ample black fruit, good structure and concentration. Brings warmth with its red cherry, dark plum and light smoke character. Moderate tannins, good acidity and nice breadth in the mouthfeel. Drink or hold. ~95 James Suckling

The 2022 ‘Louise’ was given 58% whole cluster fermentation. The site is usually picked a touch on the earlier side to harness the tannins of the Pinot Noir at this eastern-aspect location. Black florals and seaweed combine with shades of black licorice on the nose. The palate is plush and refined with serious weight and tension. Rich and refined, with serious texture and mouth-watering acidity, this really needs another year of bottle age to come together — but you can see the potential! ~95 Owen Bargreen
