About The Wine

De Muller has been bottling Priorat since 1851 — one of the three pioneer estates in the appellation. While the denomination exploded with international acclaim in the 1990s, De Muller was already producing full-bodied reds here a century earlier, back when Priorat was a secret kept by a handful of families.

The 2019 Legitim is their core expression — Garnacha and Syrah from old vines rooted in the schist and llicorella soils that give Priorat its mineral backbone and its reputation. Fermented in steel, then aged twelve months in French and American oak, it's built in the traditional mold: ripe fruit, structure, and the savory garrigue undertones that separate Priorat from every other Mediterranean appellation.

The glass shows medium purple with a ruby rim. Red berries and jammy black fruit on the nose, laced with clove, vanilla, black pepper, and the stony minerality that marks the region. The palate is meaty and savory — crunchy tannins, steely acidity, a long finish with wild berries and Mediterranean herbs. It's warm and balanced, with the tannic grip to cellar four to five years, but approachable now if you give it an hour in the decanter.

Under $25 for a wine with this much depth and pedigree is the kind of arbitrage that makes grocery-store Cabernet feel like a mistake. This is what $45 Priorat used to cost before the hype machine arrived — and it drinks like it.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Raw spices to the dark plums, strawberries and hints of rhubarb and dried meat. Pretty flavorful and juicy with a medium-bodied palate, showing some fine-grained tannins and spiced cherries to the mid-palate before a linear, medium-long finish. Enjoy now. Vegan. ~91 James Suckling

THE PRODUCER

De Muller

Founded in 1851 by August de Muller and Ruinart de Brimont — a member of a noted Alsatian winemaking family — De Muller is one of the founding names of Priorat winemaking and is considered one of the three pioneer wineries in the DOQ Priorat appellation. The winery remained in the De Muller family for over a century until 1995, when it was sold to the Martorell family, Catalan businessmen who modernized production while preserving the historic style and identity of the house.
In Priorat, De Muller farms vineyards at the "Mas de les Pusses" estate in El Molar, producing crianza and reserva reds from Garnacha, Cariñena, and Syrah. The estate also has a long-standing legacy as a producer of traditional Sacramental (Mass) wine, a right historically granted by the Vatican and later rescinded. In 1999, De Muller expanded through the acquisition of the Cochs S.A. distillery, adding "Vermut de Reus" to its portfolio.
Today the group's main production facility is located at "Mas de Valls" in Reus (DO Tarragona), with roughly 60% of production exported internationally.
