About the Wine

Outpost is a cult-status winery established in 1998 by Terry and Juli Pringle. This rare and exclusive estate produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Grenache from one of Napa’s most prestigious AVAs, Howell Mountain.

Since 2018, the estate has been owned by the insurance group, AXA Millésimes, a company that owns wineries in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Portugal, and Hungary.

These unique wines are crafted by legendary winemaker, Thomas Brown, the masterman behind  40 projects in Napa and Sonoma, including cult classics like Schrader Cellars, Maybach Family Vineyards, and Revana Family Vineyard. Thomas was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Food & Wine magazine in 2010.

This winery produces rare and exquisite red wines. These are some of the best Napa Cabs the world has ever seen. Wine Spectator said, “The Cabernets here are clearly mountain in profile—intensely colored, vividly fruited, and marked by chiseled, defined structure. But while neighbors such as Dunn next door and Robert Craig just down the road are known for their burlier tannic profiles, Outpost’s wines show a higher pitch and racier edge.”

Wine Spectator also called the Outpost’s 2019 wines “impressive.” This wine comes from an epic vintage. 2019 was awarded 97 points by Wine Spectator who said that "Wines are ripe and lush yet well-defined; a worthy follow-up to the benchmark 2018 vintage."

2019 is 2/3rds from the estate and 1/3rd from the estate's premium vineyard, True Vineyard.

Tasting Notes: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Reviews

A classic mountain cabernet sauvignon with blackcurrants, crushed berries, and black earth. Full-bodied. Tannins that are completely integrated. Pine needle. Very typical cabernet character. Long finish. Drink or hold. ~96 James Suckling

Outpost's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal, sourced from around the winery, plus some barrels from the True Vineyard that didn't make the cut for inclusion there. Just don't call it a second wine, as it's a beautiful effort in its own right, with wonderfully pure cassis fruit, accented with notions of vanilla and hints of dried herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a long, dusty, tannic (but ripe) finish, try it in four or five years and drink it over the following two decades. ~95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

As for the three Cabernet releases, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a medium to full-bodied, balanced, layered, and elegant style that just begs to be drunk. Giving up lots of blue fruits, bouquet garni, tobacco, and cedar, it will keep for 15-20 years if stored properly. ~94 Jeb Dunnuck

Packs in a lot of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors supported by a racy graphite underpinning, with showy anise, fruitcake and Christmas pudding notes filling in for dramatic effect. Best from 2023 through 2034. ~93 Wine Spectator

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain) is an ample, voluptuous wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Super-ripe dark cherry, espresso, licorice, spice, and copious new oak give the Howell Mountain Cabernet quite a bit of appeal. The 2019 is 2/3rds from the estate and 1/3rd from True. ~93 Vinous Media
