About the Wine

Hungarian Tokajis were historically among the most highly prized wines in the world. Long before Sauternes, they graced the tables of European elites and connoisseurs.

Made in the Aszú method—where shriveled grapes (beautifully afflicted with the noble rot) are painstakingly harvested one by one—are crushed and then soaked with a base wine to extract the maximum flavor and sweetness. Then the Aszú matures for at least 3 years. This method is employed only in the best vintages, and the result is a long-aging dessert wine that can cellar for decades, aided by the residual sugars in the wine. Tokaji sweetness is measured on the Puttonyos scale. A Tokaji with 5 Puttonyos, such as this exemplary wine from Château Hellha, has between 120 - 150g/l residual sugar.

While Tokaji Aszú is referred to as a dessert wine, its pairings are not restricted to dessert. Yes, it’s a complementary quaff for dark chocolate, caramelized apple dishes, creme brulee, and of course, cheese, but it also drinks well with foie gras, chicken with dates, and hot and sour savory Asian dishes. It makes a lovely aperitif, too. Served slightly chilled, it’s a versatile wine.

This Aszú 5 Puttonyos comes from La Maison Jaune, where the magic of the vineyard shines through in every bottle. Imagine taking a leisurely stroll through the surrounding vineyards or enjoying a relaxing picnic with a bottle of this incredible wine—pure bliss! The 2019 Aszú is all about balance: fresh fruit flavors, a perfect blend of grape varieties, and a hint of the noble Botrytis cinerea, which gives it that signature richness and depth. Sweet, yet complex, it’s a wine that feels special in every sip

Tasting Notes

100% Furmint. Complex aromas of ripe apricots, honey, and candied citrus peel. On the palate, it’s a velvety-smooth delight, balancing luscious sweetness with bright acidity, revealing layers of golden raisins, marmalade, and baked apple. Subtle notes of toasted almonds and spice add depth, while the long, elegant finish lingers with flavors of caramel and butterscotch, making every sip a luxurious experience.

Critical Reviews
Notes of dried mangoes and dried pineapple with almonds, honey and a touch of botrytis character. Full and rich yet the vivid acidity adds freshness, balance, sweetness and highlights the fruit. Very attractive and easy to drink. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling
