About the Wine

In the hills of Estremoz, at an altitude of 400 meters, Adega do Monte Branco farms vineyards shaped by limestone, schist, and a cooler, more moderate microclimate. This pocket of Alentejo offers something rare: big southern sunshine with the restraint of higher elevation, foggy mornings fed by a deep aquifer, and dramatic day–night swings that slow ripening and build harmony in the fruit. The estate works with traditional Portuguese varieties, planting each one where it performs best—letting the soils and the climate dictate the style.

Alentejo itself is one of Portugal’s oldest wine regions, rooted in more than 2,000 years of history. It has always been a landscape of resilience and reinvention, and Estremoz stands out within it—nicknamed the “White City” for its brilliant marble, the same stone that ended up in the Palace of Versailles and on the steps of the Vatican. In this transition zone between limestone and shale, Adega do Monte Branco produces wines that reflect the place: sun-warmed, balanced by altitude, and shaped by a terroir found nowhere else in the region.

This southern region is the country’s heartbeat for red wine. The hot days and cool nights help grapes ripen fully while preserving freshness, giving Alentejo wines their signature balance of ripe fruit, smooth texture, and easy charm. The granite and clay soils add depth and minerality, turning every sip into a taste of the landscape itself.

The 2020 Alento Tinto leans into that identity. It’s hand-harvested, cold-soaked before fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, and aged in French oak barrels (about 30% new) for a year, polishing the structure without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a full-bodied, structured Alentejo red with ripe character, freshness, and well-woven oak.

Tasting Notes

40% Aragonez, 40% Trincadeira, 10% Alicante Bouschet, and 10% Touriga Nacional.

Deep garnet in the glass, this wine hits with a rush of ripe blackberry, red plum, and a little dark spice. The palate is juicy and bold, packed with black and red fruit wrapped in firm, youthful tannins that give it real grip. It stays balanced, flavorful, and purposeful from the first sip to the long, satisfying finish—leaving a trail of dark fruit and spice that makes you want another pour.

Critical Reviews

This is a juicy and vibrant red with a fresh, berry-soaked palate with notes of dried herbs, orange peel and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with ripe, well-integrated tannins and a crunchy finish. Aragonez, trincadeira, alicante bouschet and touriga nacional. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling

Adega do Monte Branco

Alentejano, Portugal

Adega do Monte Branco is a modern Alentejo winery set just outside Estremoz, where rolling hills, limestone-rich soils, and long, sun-drenched days shape the character of its wines.

Founded by winemaker Luís Louro, the estate blends the region’s deep winemaking heritage with a contemporary approach, focusing on native Portuguese varieties and precision-driven farming. The result is a lineup of wines that balance Alentejo’s natural richness with freshness, purity, and a clear sense of place.
