About The Wine

For decades Verdicchio was the fish-shaped bottle on a checkered tablecloth. Cheap, cold, forgettable. Then a Franciacorta house went looking for a great Italian white and bought land in the Marche instead of Burgundy.

That was 2002. Barone Pizzini sent a young Milanese enologist, Alessandro Fenino, to Maiolati Spontini with one job: find out what this grape can actually do. He farmed organically from the first harvest, moved to biodynamics by 2005, and took Demeter certification in 2008 — the first estate in Le Marche to get there. Hand work in every row, both banks of the Esino River, no shortcuts.

San Paolo is where the argument gets settled. One hillside on Monte Follonica, above the village of San Paolo di Jesi, planted on sandstone with the Adriatic in view on a clear day. Fenino does not bottle it every year. 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018 — skipped. When the vintage doesn't earn a Riserva, there isn't one.

2020 earned it. Native-yeast fermentation, then time across steel, concrete and large oak casks. No new-barrel makeup, nothing layered on top of the site. What lands in the glass is 100% Verdicchio with real weight — yellow orchard fruit, citrus oil, the bitter-almond snap that tells you the grape is doing the talking, and a saline grip that pulls you back for the next sip.

Here's my honest read: this drinks like serious white Burgundy money and almost nobody in the States knows the name. Verdicchio at this level holds — open two now, forget the rest for five years, thank yourself later.

100% Verdicchio. Straw gold with a green rim. The nose runs yellow and generous — ripe pear, quince, a lick of tropical fruit — cut with lemon oil, jasmine, wild fennel and crushed almond. Bone-dry on the attack. Fuller through the middle than a white this bright has any right to be, then firm acidity arrives and scrapes it clean, finishing chalky, saline and long, with that classic bitter-almond snap on the tail.

Serve it around 50–55°F. Ice-cold kills the aromatics and you'll miss the best part of the wine. Drinking beautifully now; built to reward five-plus years in the cellar.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

"San Paolo Riserva is well known for its restraint. In 2020, a generous vintage, it persists on a lime peel character, with sage, spring flower freshness and assertive youthfulness. Bone-dry on the attack, with firm acidity as expected from a great Verdicchio, it's then tightly woven with fruit in a chalky, mineral finish. This is a wine you have to wait for, which I like! From sandstone and limestone soil at 400m, this Verdicchio is fermented with indigenous yeast in concrete then aged in big oak vessels." ~94 Decanter
