About The Wine

In 1983, the Bindella family saw past the crumbling walls and abandoned vineyards of Montepulciano. They saw potential — a gem waiting to shine. With decades of dedication, Vallocaia became a thriving estate where respect for the land brings forth wines of exceptional quality.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano sits just below Brunello in Tuscany's hierarchy, but the gap is narrower than the price suggests. The appellation's Sangiovese — locally called Prugnolo Gentile — delivers the structure and age-worthiness Tuscan collectors prize, without the trophy tax. This is the wine that makes you question what you've been paying for.

The 2020 vintage brought ideal ripening conditions across Tuscany. Warm days and cool nights preserved acidity while building concentration — the balance that separates serious Sangiovese from the one-dimensional kind.

In the glass: red cherry, dried herbs, leather, and a hint of tobacco. The structure is firm but not punishing, the kind of grip that softens over the next five years but drinks well now with an hour of air.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Aromas of blood orange, pomegranate, and cranberry fill the glass. The secondary notes include burnt wood, incense, and burned helichrysum flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with biting tannins and a linear, well-balanced finish. Drink now or age. ~91 WinesCritic.com

THE PRODUCER

Bindella

Bindella is a fourth-generation Swiss family business with roots dating back to 1909, when Jean Bindella began importing Chianti into Switzerland. Today, the family combines wine trading, hospitality, and winemaking, with its flagship estate, Tenuta Vallocaia, located in Montepulciano, Tuscany. The estate has grown from just 2.5 hectares in 1983 to 55 hectares of vineyards, focusing on Sangiovese and producing distinctive Vino Nobile di Montepulciano that reflects the character of the region.
