About The Wine

This is the patient version — the Barolo Boasso only makes when a vintage and a vineyard both earn it. Riserva isn't a marketing label in Barolo; it's a legal designation with real teeth. While standard Barolo must age a minimum of 38 months before release, Riserva demands a minimum of 62 months — over five years — including time in oak, before the wine is even allowed to reach a shelf. This 2020 Margheria Riserva took the long road on purpose.

The Boasso family has farmed in Serralunga d'Alba since the 1950s, when Giuseppe returned from World War II to a traditional Piedmontese farm growing a bit of everything. His son Franco expanded the estate through the 1970s and 80s and began estate-bottling in the mid-1980s. Today Franco runs it with sons Ezio, who focuses on the vines and cellar, and Claudio, who handles tastings — a small, hands-on family operation making around 40,000 bottles total across their whole range, still relying on long macerations and large old Slavonian oak casks rather than the smaller, trendier barrels much of the region shifted toward.

Margheria is Serralunga's more graceful side. It's a west-facing site with unusually sandy soil for the village, which is exactly why its wines tend to be some of the lightest, most fragrant, and most spice-driven in a commune otherwise known for sheer power. It shares the neighborhood with the sprawling royal-founded Fontanafredda estate — built in 1858 by Count Emanuele Alberto di Mirafiori, son of Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, on his father's old hunting grounds — and while Boasso's plot is a much smaller, quieter piece of that same ground, the pedigree of the site is real.

Give a wine like this the extra time the Riserva rules demand, and what you get is a Barolo that's already found some of its balance: the tannins have started to soften, the fruit has deepened, and the spice and perfume that Margheria is known for have had years to fully unfold before the bottle ever reaches you.

Dark cherry, plum, dried rose, licorice, and mineral notes. Sweet tart cherries with cinnamon, star anise, and dried lavender. Full body, refined tannins, silken texture, long elegant finish. The fruit leans slightly to the red side of dark with a more generous, aromatic profile.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

100% Nebbiolo. Margheria Riserva pours a garnet red already edging toward that classic Barolo brick-orange rim. The nose is where this cru shines — dried rose, ripe red cherry, and warm baking spice up front, with sandalwood, tobacco, and a whisper of dried herbs developing underneath. On the palate it's medium-to-full bodied with tannins that have started to smooth and integrate, a long, spice-laced finish, and a perfume that lingers well after the glass is empty. Pour it with roast duck, mushroom-stuffed pasta, or a well-aged Piedmontese cheese — something that can meet its elegance rather than fight its power.

THE PRODUCER

Boasso

Franco Boasso has quietly become one of Serralunga d'Alba's most reliable producers — traditional pricing, no hype, just serious Barolo from some of the commune's best-regarded vineyards. The family farms plots in Gabutti, Margheria, and Lazzarito, among others, and keeps the operation small and focused.
