About The Wine

In 1995, Benjamin Romeo secured a centuries-old cave beneath the Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja and began a quiet revolution. By 1999 he'd launched Contador — a wine that would earn twin 100-point scores from Robert Parker for the 2004 and 2005 vintages. This is Alma, his inaugural release from old-vine Garnacha sourced at three different altitudes across Rioja Alta, a wine that delivers the depth and complexity of the flagship at a fraction of the price.

Rioja's Garnacha thrives in the cooler, higher-altitude parcels of the Alta subzone, where chalky soils and old head-trained vines produce fruit with concentration and aromatic lift. Romeo farms these sites with the same obsessive attention he reserves for Contador, then ages the wine in custom French oak barrels — the full cult-wine treatment applied to a varietal that rarely sees this level of focus.

The 2020 vintage delivered ripe, powerful fruit with structure to age. Wine Advocate scored it 97 points — a number that belongs on wines twice the price. This is understated Rioja in the glass: chopped black cherry, perfumed florals, aromatic herbs, a touch of balsam. Tight now, but silky underneath, with the kind of tension that promises a long evolution.

We secured this as a six-pack because single bottles of Benjamin Romeo's work disappear fast, and because anyone serious about modern Rioja should taste what he's doing with Garnacha.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

The new red blend 2020 Alma Contador is going to be sold mostly through the négociants from Bordeaux. It was produced with grapes from three vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at different altitudes and is a blend of Tempranillo with 8% Garnacha with limited yields because of mildew. It matured in new French barriques for 20 months. He wanted a more classical image and perhaps a more classical profile of wine. It's perfumed and floral, with notes of aromatic herbs, a little balsamic and quite showy, with very fine tannins and freshness, as he used more grapes from the higher-altitude zones. It's powerful and elegant, and in a way it reminds me of the style of the initial vintages of La Cueva de Contador; it's clean and elegant. It's 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.55. It's very young but still drinkable, as the quality of the tannins is very good. I think this is the one wine I'd buy from their portfolio if I could only buy one. It transported me to the wines from the early 2000s. 10,000 bottles produced. ~97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta is a Spanish winery located in the Rioja region, near Logroño. The chief winemaker is María Vargas. Bodega Contador story starts in 1995 when Benjamin Romeo acquired a centuries old cave beneath the Castle of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja. In 1996 Benjamin Romeo made the first vintage of his 'La Cueva del Contador' wine. In 1999 he made the first vintage of 'Contador'. In 2001 Benjamin Romeo reconditioned and equipped the garage at his parents' home in San Vicente for winemaking. The new winery was opened on 21 June 2008, located at the foot of the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
