About The Wine

This is Castellare di Castellina's flagship — the wine the estate built its name on. It's made in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of Tuscany, from Sangioveto, the old-clone Sangiovese Castellare is known for, rounded out with a little Malvasia Nera. Toscana IGT on the label, which is winespeak for a Super Tuscan that plays by its own rules.

The 2020 landed 97 points from Wine Spectator and 96 from James Suckling. It's not a wine they flood the market with — 5,000 cases made worldwide, only 800 imported to the U.S. If you already know I Sodi, that's the whole pitch. If you don't, this is the vintage to start on.

Every vintage wears a different bird on the label, drawn from the wildlife on the estate — a small tell that these people care about the land, not just the score. This one's built for the long haul: Wine Spectator calls the window 2026 through 2043. Lay it down and forget about it for a few years. It rewards the patience.

A blend of Sangioveto (Sangiovese) and Malvasia Nera. Ripe cherry, blackberry and pomegranate up front, with floral lift and darker tones of Mediterranean herbs, earth, iron and tobacco. Full-bodied and firm, with velvety tannins, crisp acidity, and a long, chalky, toasted-graphite finish. Powerful now, but built to age.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Packed with ripe, juicy cherry, blackberry, pomegranate and floral aromas and flavors, this red is supple and beautifully integrated. Earth, iron and tobacco accents add detail as this winds down on the lazy, resonant aftertaste, showing terrific energy. Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera. Best from 2026 through 2043. 5,000 cases made, 800 cases imported. ~97 Wine Spectator

Deep and dark aromas of Mediterranean herbs, restrained black cherries and stern, earthy complexity. Firm on the palate, with a full body, velvety tannins. crisp acidity and a chalky finish. Long, toasted graphite aftertaste. Sangiovese and malvasia nera. A wine intended for the long haul, yet ready to drink in a year or two. ~96 James Suckling
