About the Wine

The 2020 Castello di Bossi Berardo Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG is a proud expression of Tuscany’s finest Sangiovese grapes, carefully selected from 310 acres of vineyards nestled in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the southern heart of Chianti Classico. This wine embodies the passion and vision of Marco Bacci, the driving force behind Castello di Bossi since its founding in 1984.

Marco isn’t your typical winemaker. He’s a man deeply connected to the land and history—his family estate dates back to 1099, with vineyards traced all the way to Roman times. But Marco’s brilliance lies in balancing this rich heritage with modern innovation. Under his guidance, the estate has become a model of sustainable, organic farming powered entirely by clean energy, with solar panels naturally maintained by the local sheep grazing the grounds.

A true visionary, Marco has expanded his holdings over the years to include top Tuscan estates like Renieri in Montalcino and Terre di Talamo in Morellino di Scansano. Yet, his commitment to quality and terroir remains unwavering. Every step of the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle, passes through his meticulous hands, ensuring each wine tells the story of its place and people.

Chianti Classico has two additional levels that determine the wine's quality and aging. "Chianti Classico Riserva" wines need at least two years in barrel (24 months) plus three months in bottle before being released.

Tasting Notes:

100% Sangiovese. The 2020 Berardo Riserva offers aromas of ripe cherries, warm spices, and earthy nuances. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet silky, with balanced tannins and a lingering finish. With his son Jacopo helping to bring these wines to international markets, Marco’s legacy continues to grow.

Critical Reviews

Very perfumed with flowers and sandalwood. Medium- to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are so long and intense. This will compete with top Brunellos. Linear and driven at the end. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2026. ~97 James Suckling

Bright ruby red with brilliant core. On the nose bright spice, fine blood orange, some graphite and red berryish fruit. On the palate very juicy, clear, with pronounced red fruit, fine saltiness, swings long, very elegant on ripe fruit. ~94 Falstaff

Selected from the estate’s Berardo vineyard, at an average altitude of 350 metres. The 35-hectare site is characterised by calcareous clay loam. The wine exudes seductive nuances of dusty earth, forest undergrowth and tobacco. Expansive and savoury, the dark fruited palate flaunts mellowed black currant and plum suffused with iron and leather. The tannins are grainy yet yielding, and a core of zesty acidity leads to a long, appetising finish. This begs for a hearty mushroom-based pasta dish. ~93 Decanter

Opening to medium-dark concentration, the organic Castello di Bossi 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo offers a velvet-like texture with substantial aromas of dark plum and sweet cherry and moderate tones of earth and spice that are expertly woven within the wine's fine texture. This Riserva offers good tannic structure with fine, powdery sensations to close. ~92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
