About The Wine

Castiglion del Bosco’s story begins in 1100 A.D., forged through battles, sieges, and the rise of powerful Sienese families who left their artistic mark. Pietro Lorenzetti’s Annunciazione dei Santi (1345) still graces the hamlet’s small church—a reminder that this estate has always been more than farmland. For over eight centuries, its borgo, school, stables, vineyards, and olive groves have thrived within the same boundaries, standing almost as a world unto itself.

By 1967, when the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino was formed, Castiglion del Bosco was one of its founding pillars. And in 2003, Massimo Ferragamo restored the estate to its former splendor after being captivated by the legendary Capanna Vineyard. Today, the winery is celebrated worldwide for crafting exceptional Brunello di Montalcino.

This Brunello di Montalcino comes from the Capanna vineyard, perched in the northwest of Montalcino. Naturally secluded and facing the Mediterranean Sea, its Galestro soils (clay shale and marl) shape a wine of refined elegance, depth, and undeniable personality.

The 2020 vintage gave us a Brunello that fans of Barolo or Napa Cab will find immediately compelling — structured, aromatic, and built to age, but with enough vibrancy to enjoy now. Winemaker Cecilia Leoneschi calls it a wine of "freshness, aromatic intensity, and harmonious structure." The 2020s across Montalcino are drinking beautifully young while rewarding patience — think approachable elegance rather than the massive power of 2016 or 2019.

100% Sangiovese sourced from the Capanna vineyard in the northwest corner of Montalcino, farmed on clay shale and galestro rock at 350–400 meters elevation, aged 24 months in French oak barriques (20% new) and 24 months in bottle before release.

Vibrant aromas of ripe berries, pepper, and sweet cinnamon open the nose, accented by delicate hints of white flowers.

The palate is rich yet balanced, with refreshing acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. Lively and approachable without being overripe. The finish is clean, harmonious, and persistent — with real aging potential ahead.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Darkly alluring, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino emerges with an earthy blend of crushed blackberries, grilled herbs and smoky, ashen stones. This displays textures of pure silk and a core of ripe wild berries complicated by flinty mineral tones, rosemary and hints of blood orange, all guided by brilliant acidity. The 2020 finishes with dramatic length and classical structure, leaving a spicy sensation and lingering nuances of red plum. Castiglion del Bosco has captured a remarkable depth and concentration here that's atypical of the vintage. ~ 94 Vinous Media

Aromas of cloves, pine needles, bing cherries and dried cranberries create a spicy, warm nose, while the fruit ripens on the palate without losing that snappy freshness. Firm tannins and linear, ddecisive acid fortify undertones of earth and salt. ~ 94 Wine Enthusiast

Fruit-forward with a combination of blue fruit and red-fruit jam that follows through to a medium body with medium, round tannins and a fruity finish. Polished. Drink or hold. ~ 93 James Suckling

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino has a deep brick red color and is ripe with aromas of black cherries, tarry earth, rosemary, lavender, and sweet tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, it saturates the palate with ripe tannins, savory notes of tea leaf, even acidity, and a very well-balanced finish. It boasts a good deal of depth and is going to offer a wide window for enjoyment over the coming 12-15 years. ~ 93 Jeb Dunnuck

This bottle of Brunello di Montalcino is a quality choice for big and small occasions. The wine features bold fruit notes of cranberry, red currant, red plum, and cherry. Hints of cloves, toast, and leather mingle on the palate as well, adding complexity. Fresh acidity and medium tannins keep this wine bright and structured as it evolves in the bottle. ~93 Wine Review Online

Intense ruby red colour with a delicate purple hue. Seductive fruit on the nose, plums and blueberries, as well as floral hints. Also fruity on the palate, lots of juice, animating acidity, a lingering, salty finish. ~ 92 Falstaff

Rich and dense in both flavor and structure, this red exhibits black cherry, blackberry, tar and forest underbrush notes. Its beefy tannins frame the finish, keeping this compact and a bit rustic today. Best from 2028 through 2042. 15,000 cases made, 6,000 cases imported. ~ 92 Wine Spectator

With 2,000 hectares, mostly of woodlands, Castiglion del Bosco dominates Montalcino’s northwestern quadrant. Vineyards bathe in the intense light that bounces off the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The 2020 echoes that luminosity as it wafts with fragrances of Mediterranean scrub on a warm, sunny day. The palate brings in ripe strawberry, red cherry and cola. Acidity is soft and mellow yet still lends a fresh twist, and the smooth tannins frame the wine effortlessly, ending with a characterful finish of bitter orange and cocoa. ~ 92 Decanter
