About The Wine

Florence and Daniel Cathiard — proprietors of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte since 1990 — acquired this historic Napa estate in January 2020. The property traces its roots to 1885, when two Scottish brothers, James and William Rennie, purchased sixty acres spanning Rutherford and St. Helena, planted vines, and built a stone gravity-flow winery. They were the first in California to crush grapes with a gasoline-powered engine. Fire and phylloxera ended their run; Prohibition shuttered the winery in 1920. Louis Martini revived it in 1933. Now the Cathiards have written the next chapter.

The estate team is led by head winemaker and General Manager Justine Labbé, winemaker Fabien Teitgen, and American consultant Frederick Ammons — with the late Michel Rolland, one of the world's most celebrated consulting oenologists, having shaped the wine's Bordeaux-rooted philosophy.

The Cathiard Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's flagship — a single-vineyard expression sourced exclusively from the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon block on the property, situated on the highest part of the estate at elevations that push toward 1,000 feet.

These vines, averaging 46 years of age at the time of the 2020 harvest, yield with extreme restraint — approximately 750 cases were produced in this debut vintage. Harvested by hand between September 10 and October 1, 2020, the fruit was cold-soaked, fermented with gentle manipulation, then aged 18 months in 80% new French oak — a regime that demands impeccable fruit to absorb.

Eye: Deep ruby, nearly opaque; vivid and dense with the concentration of old-vine, low-yield fruit.

Nose: Cassis, dark plum, blackcurrant, and blueberry open to layers of Valrhona chocolate, tobacco, sage, mint, and dried wood. Floral undertones and a thread of sandalwood add refinement. The nose is precise and expressive without the fruit hiding behind oak.

Palate: Full-bodied yet poised — tannins described by James Suckling as having the texture of fine velvet, running the full length of the wine. Black cherry, boysenberry, and dark chocolate are framed by liquorice, tar, and a savory undercurrent of black olive and earth. Focused acidity lifts the finish, which is long, layered, and mineral. Potent and gentle at once — the hallmark of Bordeaux-trained restraint applied to Napa's finest hillside fruit.

Drinking Window: Best from 2027–2037. Firm in youth; deserves patience.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Wonderful aromas of blackcurrants, dark plums, mint, sage, and dried wood. Some sandalwood. Full- to medium-bodied with tannins that have the texture of fine velvet and run down the length of the wine. Extremely polished and refined. Sophisticated. Firm at the end. This will age beautifully. Pure cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2026.~ 97 James Suckling

Extraordinary and opulent, this densely concentrated, luxuriously textured flagship Napa wine by Florence and Daniel Cathiard of Bordeaux is their first vintage from the former Flora Springs property. The wine is softly saturated with black currants, blueberries, spearmint and black olives for a comforting, mouthfilling expression that is at once powerful and gentle. It feels layered, deep and creamy. ~ 97 Wine Enthusiast

Ripe and juicy blue fruit aromas on the nose with some soft wood spice, acaia, liquorice, a touch of California heat in the aromas but smells fresh and inviting. Clean, supple, lively, pure and focussed on the palate. Tannins take the fore, really quite mouthfilling with ash, smoke, tar, tobacco edges, leather and some meat, underpinning the blackcurrant, black cherry and blueberry fruit. Still quite tense, focused in the centre, driving from start to finish in one line, despite the slight weight and nice density of the tannins. A very soft vanilla sweetness is also apparent. It's both potent and poised, perfumed and pure. You can't get away from the liquorice and tar undercurrent that really marks the wine. Dark, savoury, brooding, a really complete wine. Lots of personality and manages the combination of having both Bordeaux and Napa sparkle. A delicious first vintage from the new Napa estate owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard of Smith Haut Lafitte. Directors Justine Labbé and Fabien Teigen, consultants Michel Rolland and Frederick Ammons.~ 96 Decanter

There are 9,000 bottles of the flagship 2020 Cathiard Vineyard Proprietary Red, a sturdy blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Marked by scents of black cherries, cassis and cedar, this debut is medium to full-bodied and nicely proportioned but also a bit astringent and drying, in need of time to come together. Finishing with savory elements of mocha, earth and black olives, this wine offers a promising juxtaposition of California fruit with Bordelais sensibilities regarding structure and aging. ~ 94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Forward, with a gush of dark cherry and plum fruit wrapped in black licorice. Shows brambly grip but stays fleshy and open-knit overall, with a not-shy dose of dark toast on the finish. Drink now through 2033. 395 cases made. ~ 92 Wine Spectator
