About The Wine

Florence and Daniel Cathiard — proprietors of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte since 1990 — acquired this historic Napa estate in January 2020. The property traces its roots to 1885, when two Scottish brothers, James and William Rennie, purchased sixty acres spanning Rutherford and St. Helena, planted vines, and built a stone gravity-flow winery. They were the first in California to crush grapes with a gasoline-powered engine. Fire and phylloxera ended their run; Prohibition shuttered the winery in 1920. Louis Martini revived it in 1933. Now the Cathiards have written the next chapter.

The estate team is led by head winemaker and General Manager Justine Labbé, winemaker Fabien Teitgen, and American consultant Frederick Ammons — with the late Michel Rolland, one of the world's most celebrated consulting oenologists, having shaped the wine's Bordeaux-rooted philosophy.

2020 Founding Brothers is a tribute to James and William Rennie, the estate's Scottish founders, whose portraits appear on the label.

Produced exclusively from estate fruit, it is Cathiard Vineyard's Napa Valley Bordeaux blend — built to express the depth and concentration of Rutherford dust terroir while carrying the finesse of Bordeaux-trained hands.

The 2020 vintage was harvested between September 10 and October 2, from hand-harvested hillside and valley floor vines averaging 25 years of age. Yields were controlled at 2.5 tons per acre. Whole berries were gravity-transferred into tank after optical sorting, cold-soaked for up to five days, fermented below 82°F with pump-overs and punch-downs, and aged 16–18 months in 40% new French oak and 20% large foudres.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

This massively built wine wraps potent black fruit flavors and sophisticated spices in substantial tannins that will surely guide it to greater complexity and smoothness with time. Minerals, graphite, cloves, cedar and blackberries are layered inside a mouthfilling texture. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. ~ 96 Wine Enthusiast

An elegant, beautifully structured, classic red offering dark berry fruit, green tobacco, lovely integrated cedarwood, and emerging graphite notes. Full-bodied with pure, concentrated blackberry and black cherry fruit framed by pixelated tannins backed by terrifically tart blood orange acidity. A long finish of savoury wild herbs and brown spices with a touch of clove. Aged 16-18 months in 40% new French oak and large foudres. Florence and Daniel Cathiard, owners of Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux, bought the property in early 2020. The roughly 87-hectare estate hugs the eastern foothills of the Mayacamas. This blend was primarily sourced from older vines in the elevated foothills above the winery. Justine Labbé is the general manager and head winemaker. Michelle Rolland consults.~ 95 Decanter

So pure and beautiful with perfumes and cedar as well as currants. Dark mushrooms and bark. A medium-bodied wine with dark berry, currant, chocolate, hazelnut, and fine tannins. 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot. Better in two or three years and beyond. ~ 94 James Suckling

This has a good, lively mix of red and black fruit -- plum, currant, cherry -- that fills out the core, while brambly energy fuels the licorice- and roasted vanilla–accented finish. Stays grounded, thanks to a late tug of earth. Very solid for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035.~ 92 Wine Spectator
