About the Wine

Among the elite estates of the Haut-Médoc, Château Cantemerle stands out for producing some of the region's finest bottles. As one of the original 1855 Classified Growths of Bordeaux, this Fifth Growth boasts a long track record of delivering classical, age-worthy claret at a fraction of first-growth pricing. Their 2020 vintage was born from silica and gravel soils—a challenging terroir that forces the vines to struggle, ultimately yielding grapes of exceptional quality.

This structured, classically built 2020 vintage completely lives up to its historic billing. As the estate’s Grand Vin, it has become an absolute critical darling, praised for its incredible depth, structure, and sheer purity of fruit.

This classic Left Bank blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot delivers a charming, powerful bouquet paired with a soft, lively palate. Backed by layers of well-integrated, finely polished tannins, it possesses the remarkable aging potential you’d expect from a wine of this pedigree.

It is also incredibly versatile. As James Suckling notes, it’s a remarkably “food-flexible wine.” While there is always room in your cellar for a bottle that pairs effortlessly with a variety of dishes, time is running out to secure it. The highly acclaimed 2020 Bordeaux vintages are fast disappearing from the market—especially at this exceptional price.

Critical Reviews

Aromas of blackcurrants and kirsch with hints of dried blood orange, licorice and cocoa. Medium- to full-bodied with layers of well-integrated, finely polished tannins. Structured and toned with a fresh and lively fruit-forward palate, seasoned with spices and dried herbs. Lingering, chalky finish. Delicious now, but better after 2026. ~ 94 James Suckling

Cocoa bean, espresso, crayon, hedgerow, violets and ripe brambled fruits. Captures the understated finesse and joy of Cantemerle, one to share, with expansion and depths through the mid palate that become ever clearer with the more recent vintages, showcasing how Cantemerle is growing in confidence. Last vintage with Pascal Berteau as technical director, in place since 1987, and Philippe Dambrine in his last vintage as estate director, 40% new oak for ageing. ~94 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

Juicy and intense showing notes of lavender, wild violet, hyacinth and hibiscus. Full bodied, elegant and tasty showing a notable quality of material which immediately reveals itself with smoothness and personality. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. ~94 WinesCritic.com

This fine estate has produced a powerful, rich wine that has fine potential. Solid, foursquare with dense tannins that will gracefully meld into the fruit, the wine should age well. ~92 Wine Advocate
