About the Wine
The story behind this château reads like something out of a history book. Back in 1190, Pétrus d'Auzac inherited these very lands from Richard I, King of England. Fast forward through centuries of aristocratic approval, and you've got yourself a wine that earned its stripes as a 5th Growth Grand Cru Classé in 1855—a title that still carries serious weight today.
Here's where it gets interesting. In 1924, the same family behind the famous 2nd Growth Ducru-Beaucaillou took over Château Dauzac. They did something bold: they gave it that distinctive yellow label you see today. It was a statement piece then, and it still stops people in their tracks now.
The estate has seen its share of owners over the years—French businessmen, insurance companies, you name it. Each one left their mark, constantly improving the vineyard and winemaking techniques. Since 2020, successful French entrepreneur Christian Roulleau has been calling the shots, continuing this tradition of excellence.
Spread across 120 acres, the vineyard is mostly Margaux appellation territory (111 acres to be exact), with the rest classified as Haut-Médoc. The grape lineup is classic Bordeaux: Cabernet Sauvignon takes the lead, backed up by Merlot and Petit Verdot. What's really cool is how they've embraced the future—implementing biodynamic and organic farming practices that respect both the land and the wine.
Behind the scenes, Éric Boissenot serves as the estate's consulting winemaker—one of Bordeaux's most respected professionals. This guy works with 40 of the 1855 Classified estates, including the legendary Lafite, Margaux, Latour, and Mouton Rothschild. When someone of his caliber is behind your wine, you know you're in for something special.
All of this—the history, the terroir, the expertise—comes together in every bottle of Château Dauzac Margaux. It's a wine that tells a story while delivering serious quality, making it worthy of any serious wine lover's attention.
2020 was a great year for the Left Bank. Vinous Media awarded this year with a 97-point review and said: "Two thousand-twenty is an exceptional vintage for Bordeaux, certainly the best in the 2018-2020 trilogy. Quality is very, very high."
Aging: 15 months in 100% French Oak Barrels, 65% new.
Tasting Notes
72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot. On the palate, it strikes a subtle balance between the richness of its tannins and the aromatic diversity of its supple fruits, emblematic of great wines for aging. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates with its complexity, elegance and minerality, while Merlot adds roundness and silkiness. Always deep in colour, Château Dauzac expresses a subtle balance where fruits, flowers and spices are combined, with a complex body and tannins ensuring an emotional tasting experience.
Critical Reviews
This has enticing aromas of dried violets, chocolate, oyster shells, bark, blackcurrants, black plums and cloves. There’s plenty packed into a medium body, with ultra-fine, creamy tannins enveloping a perfumed core of black fruit. So creamy and caressing. 72% cabernet sauvignon and 28% merlot. Drink from 2025. ~95 James Suckling
This 1855 Grand Cru Classé in Margaux has 49 hectares of vineyards planted on deep gravel and distributed in 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Around 65% of the wine is aged in new oak barrels. A slender wine with a delicious texture. The most vertical of the wines tasted. The fruit is fresh, with powerful tannins, but camouflaged by elegance, spectacular acidity, which brings juiciness and will contribute, together with the tannins, to a long and beautiful evolution. ~95 Revista Adega
Lovely bright plum colour, with a vivid violet rim. Broad shouldered and full of confidence, this opens with damson and black cherry fruits. Dauzac is on a roll at the moment, plenty of rich depths through the mid palate, seriously impressive, velvety, packed full of fruit, cocoa bean, cloves and turmeric spice. Heavy bottle. ~95 Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux
The southernmost of the Margaux vineyards has produced a bold, black fruit and structured wine. The potential of this ripe, juicy wine is there in the tannins, the vivid black currant fruits and the wine's developing opulence. ~94 Wine Enthusiast
A terrific effort from this Margaux château, the 2020 Château Dauzac has a plump, medium-bodied, rounded style that gives it plenty of accessibility even today. Ripe black cherries, currants, smoked tobacco, and chocolate notes define the aromatics, and it has supple tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. I'd happily drink a bottle today, but it will evolve for 15+ years or so. ~93 Jeb Dunnuck
Expressive and enticing, with a showy core of loganberry, mulberry and black currant fruit flavors that meld nicely, picking up singed alder, sanguine and tobacco notes along the way. Reveals warm earth that spills in on the finish, along with a violet echo. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2027 through 2037. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 8,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported. ~93 Wine Spectator
Raspberries, currants, linden flowers, gardenias, magnolias and elderflowers describe the sensory profile of this young, vibrant expression made in Margaux. Medium bodied, biting tannins and a juicy, intriguing finale. Beautiful from the start. Drink now or hold. ~93 WinesCritic.com
Dark ruby garnet, purple reflections, subtle rim brightening. Delicately floral, nuances of blueberries and cassis, candied tangerine zest, some vanilla. Juicy and complex, good density and sweetness, ripe tannins, has length, some nougat on the finish, certain ageing potential. ~93 Falstaff
The 2020 Dauzac has an impressive bouquet, very well defined, taut and linear, pure blackberry and blueberry fruit mixed with subtle pressed violet and incense aromas. The oak is deftly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine tannins, just a light herbaceous note towards the finish with a marine-infused aftertaste, black olive compote and brine. This is a well-crafted Margaux that should age very well in bottle. ~92 Vinous Media
The 2020 Dauzac is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot, aging in French oak barriques, 66% new. The alcohol is 14%. Deep purple-black colored, it sashays out of the glass with lively, carefree scents of kirsch, black raspberries and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of dried Provence herbs, graphite and damp soil, plus a waft of tobacco. The medium-bodied palate maintains a bright crunchiness to the fruit with just enough acidity and well-managed, approachable tannins, finishing with an earthy lift. ~90-92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
