About The Wine

If you love the idea of discovering serious Bordeaux without the collector price tag, Chateau Potensac should be on your radar—especially in a vintage like 2020. Owned by the legendary Delon family (of Léoville Las Cases fame), Potensac is their northern Médoc outpost, known for crafting classically styled, cellar-worthy wines that consistently overdeliver.

The 2020 vintage is a standout—refined, focused, and full of character. Potensac’s vineyards sit atop a plateau with limestone-rich soils rarely found in the Left Bank, giving the wine surprising energy and lift. Old vines—some pushing 100 years—add even more depth. The blend in 2020 is led by Merlot, a quiet evolution that’s made the wine more approachable while retaining its trademark structure.

Vinified by the same elite team behind Léoville Las Cases and aged in barrels previously used for Clos du Marquis, this is precision winemaking at an unbeatable value. You’re getting Grand Cru-class quality from a chateau that just happens to fly under the radar. Drink it now with a good decant, or tuck it away—this wine ages gracefully for decades. Either way, it’s Bordeaux savvy at its finest.

Made from 44% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Chateau Potensac delivers bright energy and classic Left Bank character. Notes of blackcurrant, crushed stone, iron, cedar, and rose petal unfold over a sleek, medium-bodied frame. The tannins are polished yet firm, giving tension to the juicy cassis and mint-laced finish. Linear, focused, and age-worthy, this Médoc overachiever offers both charm and staying power.

CRITIC REVIEWS

What the Critics Said

Plenty of currants and flowers with crushed stone. Slate and iron, too. Lead pencil. Medium-bodied with racy and polished tannins that show intensity and length. Linear and focused. 44% merlot, 33% cabernet sauvignon, 22% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink after 2025. ~94 James Suckling

A year-in, year-out winner, the 2020 Chateau Potensac is another beauty that has the vintage's fresh, focused style as well as classic red and black currant/cherry fruits, some damp earth and underbrush nuances, medium body, nicely integrated acidity and oak, and outstanding length. It's well worth seeking out and will evolve for 15+ years. ~92+ Jeb Dunnuck

This kicks off at a high intensity and manages to deliver both concentration and freshness. Juicy and easy to approach and will easily last 10 years. Has charm and appeal, and a sappy delivery of cassis and bilberry fruits. Oldest vines on this estate are around 100 years old, helping them withstand the drought. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.63pH, 20% new oak. ~92 Decanter

Dark in color, the wine opens with persuasive notes of cedar, creme de cassis, tobacco and forest leaf in the perfume. Full-bodied, ripe, rich and packed with crisp, juicy currants, the wine finishes with a big mouthful of firm, chewy blackberries, currants and a refreshing sprig of mint on the backend. ~92 Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider

The 2020 Potensac is a jewel of a wine. Bright acids give the 2020 notable energy that is immediately apparent. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, rose petal, star anise and crushed rocks are all beautifully laced together. This finely cut, chiseled Médoc is a winner. I imagine it will age gracefully for a number of years to come. ~92 Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

A powerful, rather rich vintage for this estate, the 2020 Potensac offers up aromas of cassis, vine smoke and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and vibrant palate. Framed by powdery tannins and lively acids, it's built to age with grace. ~90+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
