About the Wine

The young and diligent Xavier Rolin is the 5th generation of vignerons in his family. Xavier is a cousin of the famous Perrin owners of Chateau Beaucastel in Courthezon. His family domaine is based in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, very close to the Orange border. This district of the appellation is called Berthaude, thus the name Maison la Berthaude.

Xavier’s family owns 40.5 total hectares — 15.5 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, 20.5 hectares in Côtes du Rhône & Villages, and 4.5 hectares in IGP. About 20% of the domaine’s production is white wine.

The domaine’s vineyards span over 72 individual parcels, each with its own distinct reflection of “terroir.” While some of the vines are more than 100 years old, the average vine age is approximately 60 years; 85% of the vines are over 22 years old.

The Châteauneuf vines are planted on two types of soil:

  1. Clay and limestone subsoil covered by the famous galets roulés (large riverbed rounded stones).

  2. Sandy soil with some marl, favoring wines with higher aromatics and finesse.

Plot selection from vineyards 106+ years old (planted in 1903 & 1906).

Aged 100% in barrels (228L).

Tasting Notes

95% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre-Syrah (co-fermented)

It showcases ripe cassis, black stone fruits, and kirsch, which converge with notes of smoke, leather, and forest floor to lend this wine penetrating depth and complexity.

Critical Reviews

Black raspberries, cassis, spicy wood, and peppery garrigue all emerge from the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Maison La Berthaude Réserve Des Vignes Centenaires, another wonderfully concentrated, medium to full-bodied 2020 with ripe tannins. It’s a touch closed and will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age. It’s going to have 10-15 years of prime drinking. ~ 92 Jeb Dunnuck

What our customers say about us

Maison La Berthaude

Rhone Valley, France

The domaine got its name in 1969 when Roger Perrin took over the vineyard from his father-in-law, Paul Bravay. Tragically, he died in the middle of a harvest in 1986, and his son took over. Luc was a trained oenologist and had been an apprentice at Chateau Beaucastel – one of the absolute best producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. He modernized the facilities in the late 90s, so that the buildings and equipment, to this day, appear extremely well-organized.

Since then, the winery has been run by Luc's sister, Véronique, and her son, Xavier. Véronique worked as a practicing oenologist in Burgundy before the takeover, and Xavier has completed an oenological education in Macon, also in Burgundy. The two and the rest of the team now work to perpetuate Roger and Luc's visions, with the basic principles of observation, respect for nature, know-how and close collaboration with their customers.

The domaine is located in the fabled village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, which is located in the southern part of the Rhône Valley. The Rhône Valley is approximately 800 km long and runs through France and Switzerland. It has its source in Valais in Switzerland and its outlet in the Camargue, a large marshland south of Nîmes and Avignon.
